The 10R80 is the 10-speed automatic behind the 2017-up F-150, the 2018-up Mustang GT, the Expedition, Navigator, Ranger, and Bronco. Ford calls it "fill for life," which in the real world means the fluid is baked and brown by 80,000-100,000 miles. A fluid service is the single best thing you can do to fend off the 10R80's known shudder and harsh-shift complaints, and it is very doable in a driveway if you respect two things: the exact fluid spec and the fill temperature window.
Get the wrong ATF in a 10R80 and you will chase shudder forever. Get the fill level wrong and you will get harsh shifts or overheating. Both are avoidable.
10R80 Fluid Change Cost: DIY vs Shop vs Dealer
| Service | DIY Cost | Independent Shop | Ford Dealer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drain & fill (pan drop, filter, gasket) | $90 - $160 | $250 - $400 | $350 - $550 |
| Full fluid exchange / flush | $180 - $280 | $400 - $600 | $550 - $800 |
The DIY number is mostly fluid. A pan drop only exchanges roughly half the total fluid because the torque converter holds the rest, so many owners do a drain-and-fill, drive a couple hundred miles, then repeat to refresh more of it. Two drain-and-fills still cost less than one dealer flush.
The Fluid: Mercon ULV Only
The 10R80 requires Motorcraft Mercon ULV (Ultra Low Viscosity). This is not Mercon LV, not Mercon V, not "universal" ATF. ULV is a thinner fluid specific to Ford's 10-speed and the 8F transmissions. Ford's part number is XT-12-QULV. Using a heavier fluid is a leading cause of 10R80 torque-converter shudder complaints after a botched service.
If you use an aftermarket fluid, it must explicitly state Mercon ULV / Ford WSS-M2C949-A compatibility on the label. Do not assume.

10R80 Fluid Capacity
| Service Type | Approx. Fluid Needed |
|---|---|
| Pan drop / drain & fill | ~7 quarts |
| Full system (dry, complete exchange) | ~13 quarts |
Buy a case (12 quarts) if you plan to do a proper double drain-and-fill or a full exchange. Buy 7-8 quarts for a single pan-drop service. Always have one extra quart on hand for topping to level.
The Part Most People Get Wrong: The Fill Procedure
The 10R80 has no dipstick. You fill through a plug on the side of the pan and set the level by fluid temperature, exactly like the 6R80 and ZF units. Overfill or underfill and you get harsh shifts or aeration.
- Pan and filter: the filter is integral to some pans; a pan-with-filter kit is the clean way to service it. Torque the pan bolts to roughly 89 in-lbs in a crisscross pattern.
- Fill through the side plug until fluid runs out, then install the plug and start the engine.
- Warm to the spec window: Ford's fluid level check is done with the transmission fluid at roughly 190-200°F (about 88-93°C). You need a scan tool that reads transmission fluid temperature to hit this.
- Cycle the gears with your foot on the brake, then crack the fill plug in the temp window. A small stream should dribble out. If it gushes, it is overfilled; if nothing comes out, add until it does.
You cannot do this correctly by guessing temperature. A cheap Bluetooth OBD2 dongle with an app that shows trans temp is enough, and it pays for itself the first time.

A pan-with-filter and gasket kit plus the fluid is the whole parts list for a 10R80 service:

How Often Should You Change 10R80 Fluid?
Ignore "fill for life." For a truck that tows, plows, or sees heat, change it every 50,000-60,000 miles. For an easy-driven daily, every 75,000-80,000 miles. Many 10R80 shudder complaints simply go away with fresh ULV because the original fluid had sheared down and lost its friction stability. Fresh fluid on time is the cheapest 10-speed insurance you can buy.

Can I use Mercon LV in a 10R80?
No. The 10R80 requires Mercon ULV, which is thinner. Mercon LV is the wrong viscosity and is a known trigger for shudder in these transmissions.
Does a 10R80 fluid change fix shudder?
Often, yes, if it is caught early. Fresh ULV restores the friction properties the worn fluid lost. If the shudder is baked in from long-term neglect, you may also need the updated torque converter under Ford's TSB.
Do I really need a scan tool to change 10R80 fluid?
To set the level correctly, yes, because the fill is temperature-referenced and there is no dipstick. A basic Bluetooth reader that shows transmission temperature is enough.
