The parts called out here are what we have actually put through these units on the bench, not whatever ranks first in a search.

The 45RFE and its five-speed sibling the 545RFE are everywhere in late-model Chrysler iron. If you own a Jeep Grand Cherokee, a Dodge Ram 1500, a Dakota, a Durango, or a Liberty from the early 2000s through the early 2010s, there is a good chance this is the transmission under your truck. They are not bad units. They are over-complicated, they hate neglected fluid, and they have two or three failure points that show up on the bench again and again. Rebuild one correctly and it will outlive the truck. Cut a corner on the solenoid pack or the filters and you will be back under it in a year.

This is a parts-and-strategy page, not a step-by-step teardown. The goal is simple: by the time you are done reading you should know exactly which kit to put in your cart, what the kit will not include, and which two or three upgrade parts are worth the extra money.

Which Trucks Got the 45RFE / 545RFE

Chrysler introduced the 45RFE in 1999 as a heavier-duty replacement for the aging 42RE/44RE family. The "RFE" stands for Rear-wheel-drive Full Electronic. A few years later they added a gear ratio in software and hardware and called it the 545RFE. The two share roughly 90 percent of their internals, which is why a single rebuild kit usually covers both.

If you are not sure which one you have, drop the pan and count the gears the truck shifts through, or pull the build sheet. A 45RFE will hold a gear longer before grabbing overdrive; the 545RFE has a second overdrive and an alternate second gear it uses for engine braking and limp behavior.

45RFE vs 545RFE — What Actually Differs

For a rebuild, the differences between the two are small but they matter when you order parts and program the truck afterward. The 545RFE is essentially a 45RFE with a fifth ratio enabled and a revised valve body and solenoid strategy. Same case, same pump, same clutch packs in most respects.

Practical takeaway: order the kit that lists your exact RFE variant, but do not panic if the box says "45RFE/545RFE." That is normal. The part that is truly variant-specific is the solenoid pack and, sometimes, the valve body separator plate.

Common Failure Points — What Kills These Units

The Solenoid Pack

This is the headline failure. The 45RFE/545RFE solenoid pack lives on top of the valve body and controls line pressure and shift timing. When it goes, you get harsh shifts, a stuck gear, a no-move condition, or a check-engine light throwing pressure-control or solenoid-performance codes. People chase this for months thinking the trans is junk when the actual fix is a $200-300 solenoid pack. On any rebuild, replace it. Do not reuse the old one to save money. We treat a new solenoid pack as mandatory, not optional, on every RFE that crosses the bench.

Overdrive / 4C Clutch Burnup

The overdrive and the 4C (fourth clutch) packs take the most abuse, especially in trucks that tow or that ran low on fluid. Burned frictions here give you slipping in the upper gears and that telltale smell on the dipstick. A quality master kit covers these, but pay attention to friction count and material — this is exactly where a cheap kit cuts corners.

Pump Wear and Cross-Leaks

The pump can wear at the gear pockets and the bushing, dropping line pressure across the board. Low pressure causes slip, which causes heat, which burns clutches — a death spiral. Inspect the pump on every rebuild. If the bushing is scored or the gears are worn, replace the pump rather than band-aid it.

Valve Body Bore Wear

Aluminum valve bodies wear at the high-traffic bores — the switch valve, the pressure regulator, the accumulator bores. Worn bores leak pressure internally and you get inconsistent shifts that no solenoid pack will fix. This is where Sonnax earns its keep (more below).

Planetary and Bearing Wear

Less common, but on high-mile cores you find planetary gear wear and tired thrust bearings. Listen for a whine that changes with gear. A master kit gives you the bushings and thrust washers; a planetary set is a separate purchase if yours is chewed up.

What's in a Quality Rebuild Kit — and the Dual-Filter Trap

A proper master overhaul kit for the 45RFE/545RFE should contain:

The dual-filter setup. The 45RFE and 545RFE use TWO filters, not one. There is a primary spin-on/flat filter in the pan and a second cooler-return (charge) filter. New rebuilders replace the obvious pan filter and reinstall the old secondary filter, and then wonder why pressure is off or why the converter takes forever to fill. Replace both. A "filter kit" for these units should list two filters; if it only shows one, it is incomplete. Confirm the kit covers both before you buy.

One more note: a "master kit" includes frictions and steels; an "overhaul kit" or "banner kit" usually means seals and gaskets only. Read the listing. If you are doing a full rebuild you want the master kit. If you are just resealing, the banner kit is fine.

Upgrade Parts Worth the Money

A stock rebuild puts the truck back to factory. A few targeted upgrades make it better than factory, and on a unit with known weak spots, that is money well spent.

Rebuild Kit Brands — An Honest Buyer's View

You will see four names over and over when shopping for RFE kits. Here is how we rank them after actually running them.

BrandWhat You're GettingBest For
Transtec (seals)The gold standard for the seal and gasket portion. OE-quality sealing rings, no cross-leaks. Many master kits use Transtec seals inside.Anyone — do not cheap out on seals.
Raybestos (frictions)Excellent frictions, including high-energy GPZ options for the clutches that burn. Consistent thickness, clean material.Towing trucks, anyone who wants better-than-stock holding.
AltoStrong frictions and steels, good red Eagle / Kolene options. Slightly behind Raybestos on the high-energy stuff but very solid and often better priced.Daily drivers and value-minded full rebuilds.
ATPBudget master kits. Gets the job done for a light-duty, stock rebuild, but friction material and seal quality are a step down. Fine for a grocery-getter, not what we put in a tow rig.Tight budgets, low-stress applications.

Our default recommendation: a master kit built on Transtec seals with Raybestos or Alto frictions, plus a new solenoid pack and both filters bought separately if the kit does not include the secondary filter. Skip the no-name eBay kits entirely — the frictions glaze and the Teflon rings cross-leak, and you will be doing this twice.

FAQ

Will a 45RFE kit work on a 545RFE?

For frictions, steels, seals, and bushings, mostly yes — about 90 percent is shared. The variant-specific parts are the solenoid pack and sometimes the valve body separator plate. Buy a kit that lists your exact variant and match the solenoid pack to the truck.

Why are there two filters?

The RFE family uses a primary pan filter and a secondary cooler-return (charge) filter. Both must be replaced on a rebuild. Reusing the old secondary filter causes pressure and converter-fill problems. If your filter kit only shows one filter, it is incomplete.

Do I have to replace the solenoid pack?

On a rebuild, yes, treat it as mandatory. It is the most common failure point on these units and reusing a worn pack is the fastest way to be back under the truck. A new or updated pack also clears most of the harsh-shift and stuck-gear complaints.

Is the 545RFE a reliable transmission once rebuilt?

Yes. Rebuilt with quality frictions, a new solenoid pack, both filters, and a Sonnax pressure regulator fix, the 545RFE is a stout unit that will outlast the rest of the truck. The reliability problems come from neglect and corner-cutting, not the core design.
