The 62TE is Chrysler's six-speed front-wheel-drive transaxle, in production from 2007 and used across an enormous fleet: Town & Country, Grand Caravan, Dodge Journey, Avenger, Chrysler Sebring and 200, Ram C/V Tradesman, and the VW Routan. It is essentially the four-speed 41TE architecture with a compounder planetary added on to produce six ratios, and it inherited both the strengths and the weaknesses of that design.

The short answer on cost: a 62TE solenoid pack replacement runs $500 to $950 out the door. A valve body replacement runs $900 to $1,800. The reason those numbers matter less than they should on this transmission is that a large share of 62TE "valve body" jobs fail to fix the vehicle — because the actual problem was never the valve body. It was line pressure. More on that below, and read it before you buy anything.

62TE Symptoms That Point at the Valve Body

The Codes

CodeMeaningWhat It Points At
P0700TCM requested MILPlaceholder only. You must read TCM-specific codes.
P0868Transmission fluid pressure lowThe important one on this transmission. Low line pressure. Pump wear, pressure regulator circuit, or a leaking valve body. Do not skip the gauge test.
P0731 - P0736Gear 1 through Reverse incorrect ratioCommanded gear did not produce the expected input/output ratio. Slipping clutch or missing apply pressure.
P0841 / P0846Pressure sensor/switch A and B rationalityPressure switches inside the solenoid pack disagreeing with commanded state. Common early warning.
P0871 / P0872Pressure sensor/switch C rationality and circuitSame family. Check the connector and the harness routing before parts.
P0750 - P0770Shift solenoid A through E circuit faultsElectrical faults inside the solenoid pack. Pack replacement.
P0740 / P0741TCC circuit / performanceConverter clutch not applying or slipping. Solenoid, valve body circuit, or converter.
P1776 / P1775Solenoid switch valve latched in TCC or LR positionChrysler-specific. Solenoid switch valve stuck. This is a valve body fault and a strong buy signal for a reman unit.

Solenoid Pack vs Valve Body on a 62TE

The Solenoid Pack

Like the 41TE it descends from, the 62TE carries its solenoids in a single serviceable module that mounts to the transaxle and mates to the valve body through the case. The pack contains the shift and pressure-control solenoids plus the pressure switches. That is genuinely good news for cost, because the pack is the failure point far more often than the casting is, and because on most platforms it is reachable without removing the transaxle.

Parts cost for a reman or quality aftermarket 62TE solenoid pack is roughly $220 to $420. Genuine Mopar can run $500 and up. Part numbers changed across the production run — the early 2007-2010 packs are not universally interchangeable with later ones, and some suppliers list separate pack applications for Journey versus minivan. Order by VIN. A supplier who will not confirm fitment by VIN is guessing with your money.

We have a full cost breakdown for the pack alone in the 62TE solenoid pack replacement cost guide.

The Valve Body

The casting itself fails from bore wear. Aluminum bores go oval around hardened steel spool valves, the valves stop sealing, and pressure that was supposed to hold a clutch bleeds into the sump instead. The 62TE's solenoid switch valve bore is a known wear point — when it wears or sticks, you get the P1775/P1776 family and a transmission that will not shift correctly no matter how many solenoid packs you throw at it. Reman valve bodies run $450 to $850. Bare castings from a salvage yard run $150 to $300 and carry someone else's wear.

The Low Line Pressure Trap — Read This Before You Buy Parts

This is the part of the 62TE story that costs people the most money, and it is why so many 62TE valve body replacements do not fix the vehicle.

The 62TE oil pump wears. As the pump wears, volume drops, and line pressure with it. Low line pressure has three downstream effects, all of which look like valve body faults on a scan tool:

Meanwhile, the low pressure that started as a pump problem causes clutch slip, and slipping clutches shed friction material into the fluid. That debris goes straight back through the pump and the valve body, accelerating wear in both. It is a self-reinforcing loop: a marginal pump makes clutch debris, and clutch debris finishes off the pump and scores the valve body bores. By the time most 62TEs come in with P0868, both ends of that loop are well underway.

What to do about it: before you spend a dollar on a valve body, put a mechanical gauge on the line pressure tap and read actual pressure at idle in Drive and at a raised, held RPM against the brake. If line pressure is low and does not rise properly with load, a new valve body will not fix your van. You are looking at a pump, and if the fluid smells burnt or the pan has friction material in it, you are looking at a rebuild. Cut the old filter open and look at it. Grey metallic paste means pump and bushing wear. Black fuzz means clutch material.

If you find that, stop and price a rebuild or a reman unit instead. Our 62TE problems overview covers where that line falls, and the 62TE limp mode diagnosis guide walks the decision tree for a van that is already defaulting to second gear.

Real Cost Ranges and Labor Hours

OptionPartsNotes
Solenoid pack, reman/aftermarket$220 - $420Best first move when codes are electrical or rationality only and line pressure checks out.
Solenoid pack, genuine Mopar$450 - $620Dealer counter. Worth it on a van you plan to keep another five years.
Reman valve body with pack$550 - $950Confirm the rebuilder addresses the solenoid switch valve bore specifically.
Reman valve body, bare$450 - $850Reuse a known-good pack only. Do not reuse a pack that threw electrical codes.
Used / salvage valve body$150 - $300Unknown bore wear. Rarely worth the labor to install twice.
Filter kit, pan gasket, ATF+4$60 - $120Mandatory. Roughly 6 to 7 quarts on a pan drop; more on a full service.

Labor

Labor on a 62TE is where quotes diverge sharply, because access differs by platform. On a Journey or an Avenger with reasonable underhood room, a solenoid pack is a 1.5 to 2.5 hour job. On an RT-body minivan (Town & Country, Grand Caravan, Ram C/V) with the transaxle buried behind subframe and exhaust, some shops charge closer to three hours for the same pack because of what has to come out of the way first.

A valve body R&R in the vehicle is generally quoted at 3.0 to 4.5 hours. Some shops price it as though the transaxle comes out, which pushes it toward 8 hours and $1,200 in labor alone. It does not have to come out for valve body work on most 62TE applications. If your quote assumes removal, ask why.

JobPartsLaborRealistic Total
Solenoid pack + filter + fluid$280 - $5401.5 - 3.0 hr$500 - $950
Reman valve body + pack + filter + fluid$610 - $1,0703.0 - 4.5 hr$900 - $1,800
Dealer, OE parts$900 - $1,5003.5 - 4.5 hr$1,500 - $2,400
DIY, reman valve body$610 - $1,070a full weekend$610 - $1,070

For reference: a reman 62TE transaxle installed runs $3,200 to $4,800 in most markets. If your valve body quote lands north of $2,200, you are close enough to a unit replacement that you should get both prices before you decide.

Fluid and Filters — Non-Negotiable

ATF+4 only. Chrysler MS-9602 spec. Not Dexron VI, not a multi-vehicle "compatible with ATF+4" bottle. The 62TE's shift calibration is built around ATF+4's specific friction modifier package, and the wrong fluid produces harsh shifting and converter shudder that look exactly like the mechanical faults you are trying to repair. This is the single most common self-inflicted wound on these transaxles after a quick-lube fluid service.

Replace the filter every time the pan is down. Pan bolts torque to roughly 105 in-lb — inch-pounds, not foot-pounds. Over-torquing warps the pan rail and gives you a leak that will bring the vehicle back.

The Post-Install Relearn

The 62TE TCM adapts using Clutch Volume Index values — learned fluid volumes for each clutch pack. Those values are matched to the specific hydraulic characteristics of the hardware installed when they were learned. Bolt on a different valve body or solenoid pack and every one of those learned values is now wrong, which is why a van can drive worse immediately after a correct repair.

Run a Quick Learn. It requires a scan tool with TCM bidirectional capability — a dealer-level tool or a capable aftermarket bidirectional scanner. Battery disconnects do not do it.

Conditions the TCM Requires

The routine cycles the shifter through positions on command and takes a few minutes. Afterward, drive the vehicle through repeated light and moderate throttle upshifts. Shift quality normally settles over the first 20 to 50 miles. Then watch the CVIs again on the scan tool. If one clutch's CVI climbs steadily over the next few hundred miles, that clutch is wearing and the valve body was treating a symptom. If line pressure and CVIs both look right and the van shifts clean, you fixed it.

FAQ

Can I replace just one solenoid in the 62TE pack?

Not practically. The pack is sold and serviced as an assembly, pressure switches included.

My van only has P0700. Is that the valve body?

No. P0700 means the TCM has a stored code, nothing more. Read the TCM's own fault list with a capable tool. Plenty of 62TEs arrive with P0700 and a chafed harness or a failed input speed sensor.

Will a valve body fix P0868?

Sometimes, and only if the pressure loss is in the valve body rather than the pump. Verify with a mechanical pressure gauge first. Replacing a valve body against P0868 without a pressure test is the most expensive guess in 62TE repair.

Does the transaxle have to come out?

For valve body and solenoid pack work on most 62TE applications, no. Some shops price it that way regardless. Ask for the labor operation being quoted.

How long will a reman valve body last?

Behind clean fluid, a healthy pump, and clutches that are not shedding material, 100,000 miles is realistic. Behind a worn pump, it may not make one winter. The pump question is the one that decides it.

Is a shudder always the torque converter?

No, but on a 62TE it usually is or involves it. Rule out the fluid spec first, then the converter, then the valve body's TCC circuit.
