The 6T30 is the smallest member of GM's transverse 6-speed family, sharing architecture with the 6T40, 6T45, and 6T50. You will find it under the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, Trax, and Orlando, and the Buick Encore, mated mostly to the 1.4L turbo and 1.8L Ecotec engines. It is a compact, hydraulically busy unit built to a tight package and a tight cost target, and it has one failure that dominates everything else.
That failure is the 3-5-R wave plate. It is the single most common reason a 6T30 comes apart, it happens without warning, and it is why the internet is full of Cruze owners describing a transmission that was fine on Tuesday and had no 3rd, 5th, or reverse on Wednesday. Everything else on this unit — solenoids, harsh shifts, fluid degradation — is secondary.
The 3-5-R Wave Plate — The Defining 6T30 Failure
Inside the 3-5-R clutch pack sits a wave plate: a thin, wavy spring steel ring that cushions clutch apply so the shift is not a hammer blow. GM's original design used a plate that was too thin for the duty cycle. Under repeated apply cycles it work-hardens, cracks, and then shatters.
When it goes, three things happen essentially at once. You lose 3rd gear, 5th gear, and reverse, because all three depend on that clutch pack. The car will typically still move in 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th, so it limps home. And the fragments of the broken plate migrate through the unit, scoring the drum and getting drawn into the valve body and pump.
Warning signs, when there are any at all: a hard or clunky 3-5 shift for a few weeks, an intermittent flare on the 2-3, or reverse that hesitates for a beat. Many owners get nothing. The failure is famous for being abrupt, and it typically shows up somewhere between 60,000 and 120,000 miles.
What a Correct Repair Looks Like
- Updated thicker wave plate — the revised GM part, not another original-spec plate. Installing the same thin plate guarantees a repeat.
- Full 3-5-R clutch pack — frictions and steels, because the shattering plate hammers the pack.
- Inspect the drum and splines — fragments gouge the drum. A scored drum will not hold a new pack.
- Clean or replace the valve body and solenoids — metal debris in the bores causes shift faults later that get blamed on the rebuild.
- New filter, new fluid, flush the cooler and lines — debris parked in the cooler will come right back.
A wave plate repair done properly means the transmission comes out and comes apart. Anyone quoting you a cheap in-car fix for a lost-3rd-5th-and-reverse 6T30 is not doing the job.

Symptom to Cause — Fast Triage Table
| Symptom | Most Likely Cause | Confirm It By |
|---|---|---|
| No 3rd, no 5th, no reverse; 1-2-4-6 still work | 3-5-R wave plate shattered | Pan drop — you will find pieces of spring steel. This is diagnostic on its own. |
| Harsh, banging 1-2 shift, worse when cold | 1-2-3-4 clutch wear, valve body bore wear, or a drifted PC solenoid | Line pressure test hot and cold; compare commanded to actual |
| Slipping in 1st and 4th but 3rd and 5th fine | 1-2-3-4 clutch pack burned | Gear ratio error codes plus friction dust in the pan |
| Stuck in a single gear, no upshifts, warning light | Limp mode from a solenoid or speed sensor electrical fault | Scan codes before anything else |
| Shudder at 40-60 mph on light throttle | Torque converter clutch shudder from degraded fluid or worn TCC lining | Feather the brake at the shudder — if it stops, it is TCC |
| Delayed engagement into drive or reverse when cold | Low fluid, pump wear, or a leaking valve body separator plate | Check level at correct temperature, then line pressure |
| Erratic speedometer plus rough shifts | Input or output speed sensor failure | Live data — look for RPM dropouts while driving |
| Red fluid puddle at the front of the pan or bellhousing | Pan gasket, side cover, axle seal, or front pump seal | Clean the area, dust with talc, drive, and find the source |
Harsh 1-2 Shift — Diagnose Before You Rebuild
A slamming 1-2 is the second-most-common 6T30 complaint and it is not always internal. Work through it in this order:
- Fluid level and condition. This unit is level-sensitive and has no dipstick on most applications. It is checked through a fill plug at a specified fluid temperature, typically in the 95-115 degree F window. Checking it hot or cold gives you a wrong reading and a wrong diagnosis.
- Adaptive learn. After a battery disconnect, a TCM reflash, or a fluid service, adapts reset and shifts feel wrong until the TCM relearns. Drive it through a full relearn cycle before condemning hardware.
- TCM software. GM issued multiple shift-quality calibration updates for these units. A reflash at a dealer or a capable independent has fixed a lot of harsh-shift complaints outright.
- Pressure control solenoid. Drifted high gives maximum line pressure and a violent shift at every change, not just the 1-2.
- Valve body bore wear. Classic tell is normal cold, harsh hot. Aluminum bores grow with heat and a marginal valve bypasses.
- 1-2-3-4 clutch wear. Last on the list, not first. Confirmed by friction dust and ratio-error codes, not by feel.

Fluid — DEXRON-VI, and It Matters More Than You Think
The 6T30 requires DEXRON-VI. Not DEXRON-III, not a universal multi-vehicle ATF that lists DEXRON-VI as one of forty applications on the back label. DEXRON-VI is a lower-viscosity, tighter-shear-stability spec, and the 6T30's clutch apply timing and TCC controlled-slip strategy were calibrated around it. Put thicker or wrong-friction-modifier fluid in and you get harsh shifts, TCC shudder, and accelerated clutch wear.
GM marketed this as a lifetime fill. Treat that as a warranty-period statement, not an engineering one. Every shop that sees these units regularly services them, and 45,000 to 60,000 mile intervals are the practical recommendation. Severe duty — stop and go, towing anything, hot climates — pull that to 30,000 to 40,000.
Capacity is roughly 7 quarts total; a drain and fill moves about 3.5 to 4.5 quarts. Because of the fill-plug-and-temperature procedure, this is a job that punishes guessing. If you are doing it yourself, get a scan tool that reads transmission fluid temperature so you can set the level at the correct temp window.

Trouble Codes You Will Actually See
| DTC | Meaning | What It Usually Is |
|---|---|---|
| P0716 / P0717 | Input speed sensor performance / no signal | Sensor or connector. Check for corrosion before ordering parts. |
| P0722 / P0723 | Output speed sensor no signal / intermittent | OSS failure; speedometer usually drops with it |
| P0729 - P0736 | Incorrect gear ratio, specific gear | Real mechanical slip. Gear-specific ratio codes on 3rd, 5th, or reverse strongly suggest wave plate. |
| P0741 | TCC stuck off, excessive slip | Degraded fluid, worn TCC lining, or TCC solenoid |
| P0742 | TCC stuck on | Solenoid stuck; stalls at stops |
| P0748 | Pressure control solenoid A electrical | Open or shorted solenoid, or internal harness damage |
| P0776 / P0796 | Pressure control solenoid B or C performance | Stuck solenoid or bore wear; often shows as a specific gear misbehaving |
| P0751 / P0776 | Shift solenoid performance / stuck off | Debris in the valve body, frequently downstream of a wave plate failure |
| P0842 / P0843 | Transmission fluid pressure switch circuit | Pressure switch or wiring; can trigger limp mode |
| P1811 | Maximum adapt and long shift | Clutch wear, low line pressure, or a drifting PC solenoid. Test, do not guess. |
The tell that separates a 6T30 wave plate from a generic slip is gear specificity. Codes and symptoms confined to 3rd, 5th, and reverse point at the 3-5-R pack. Codes on 1st and 4th point at 1-2-3-4. Codes on everything point at pressure.

| TCM reflash / shift calibration update | n/a | $120 - $250 |
| Shift or pressure control solenoid replacement | $60 - $260 | $450 - $900 |
| Remanufactured valve body | $320 - $600 | $800 - $1,400 |
| Wave plate repair — 3-5-R pack, updated plate, drum | $300 - $650 in parts | $1,900 - $3,000 |
| Full rebuild — all clutches, converter, pump, seals | $600 - $1,100 in kits | $2,700 - $4,000 |
| Remanufactured unit installed with warranty | $1,800 - $2,900 unit | $3,300 - $4,800 |

How to Decide
- Confirmed wave plate, otherwise healthy unit under about 130,000 miles: targeted wave plate repair with the updated part is the value play, provided the shop replaces the drum if it is scored.
- Wave plate plus burnt 1-2-3-4 or metal throughout: pay for a full rebuild. A partial repair in a contaminated unit fails again inside a year.
- Buying a salvage 6T30: assume it has the original thin wave plate unless proven otherwise. You are buying a countdown timer.
- Car worth under about $4,000: a reman install often exceeds the vehicle value. Salvage with a written warranty is the honest option.
Whatever route you take, add an auxiliary cooler if the vehicle sees stop-and-go or hot climates. These units run hot in a tight engine bay, and fluid temperature is what determines whether you get 80,000 miles out of the repair or 180,000.

How long does a 6T30 last?
With regular DEXRON-VI service and the updated wave plate installed, 180,000 to 220,000 miles is achievable. On the original wave plate with no fluid service, the common failure window is 60,000 to 120,000.
Can I drive with a broken wave plate?
The car will usually move in 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th, so it will get you home. Do not commute on it. Every mile grinds spring steel fragments through the pump, valve body, and cooler and turns a wave plate job into a full rebuild.
Is the 6T30 the same as the 6T40?
Same family and very similar internals, sized for different torque. The 6T30 is the lightest-duty version. Many soft parts, solenoids, and the wave plate itself carry across; final drive ratios and some hard parts do not. Match by RPO code before ordering.
Why does my 6T30 have no dipstick?
GM designed it as a sealed unit checked through a fill/level plug at a specified fluid temperature. It is not that the fluid never needs checking; it is that checking it requires a scan tool reading fluid temp and a lift. Do it at the correct temp or the reading is meaningless.
Will a fluid change fix my harsh 1-2 shift?
Sometimes, if the fluid is degraded and the unit is otherwise healthy. Do that, verify the level at the correct temperature, and check whether a TCM calibration update applies before you let anyone quote a rebuild off shift feel alone.
