The Cost Answer, Up Front
A 6T70 rebuild at an independent transmission shop in 2026 runs $3,200 to $4,800. A remanufactured unit installed runs $3,600 to $5,500. Doing the rebuild yourself puts you at $900 to $1,800 in parts plus 18 to 30 hours of work and a bench you do not need for anything else that week.
The reason the range is wide is that a 6T70 rarely fails in only one place. A cracked 3-5-R wave plate sends debris through the whole unit, and by the time it reaches a shop the pump is often worn and the torque converter is contaminated. Whether those come along for the ride is most of the price difference.

| Remanufactured torque converter | $180 - $350 | Included | Included |
| Solenoid body / TEHCM if faulted | $250 - $600 | $300 - $700 add-on | Included |
| Complete reman unit (part only) | - | - | $2,300 - $3,600 |
| DEXRON VI fluid (10-11 qt) | $65 - $120 | Included | Included |
| Labor | 18 - 30 hrs of your time | 10 - 14 hrs @ $130-$200/hr | 8 - 11 hrs @ $130-$200/hr |
| TOTAL | $900 - $1,800 (+ converter) | $3,200 - $4,800 | $3,600 - $5,500 |
Dealer replacement with a GM factory reman lands around $5,400 to $7,000 depending on model and labor rate. A used junkyard 6T70 is $900 to $1,800 and carries an unknown wave plate that is probably already cracking, which is why shops that value repeat customers will not install one.
Which Vehicles Have the 6T70
The 6T70 is GM's transverse front-wheel-drive six-speed, co-developed with Ford, and shares architecture with the Ford 6F50. The 6T75 is the higher-torque version with the same core and the same failure list. Applications, roughly 2007 through 2019:
- Chevrolet: Malibu 2.4L and 3.6L, Impala, Equinox 3.6L, Traverse, Captiva.
- GMC: Acadia, Terrain 3.6L.
- Buick: LaCrosse, Regal, Enclave.
- Cadillac: SRX, XTS.
- Saturn: Outlook, Vue.
The heavy crossovers, Traverse, Acadia and Enclave, are the ones that eat wave plates. They carry the most weight on the same clutch pack and they tow. A Malibu with a 2.4L will often make 180,000 miles on the same unit that dies at 95,000 in a loaded Traverse.
Symptoms and the Known-Weak Internals
The 3-5-Reverse Wave Plate
This is the 6T70's signature failure and it announces itself unmistakably: you lose third gear, fifth gear and reverse all at once, but first, second, fourth and sixth still work. Those three gears share the 3-5-R clutch pack. The wave plate in that pack is the apply cushion, and the original design cracks and comes apart. The pieces then chew the clutch pack and circulate debris through the pump and valve body.
There is no way to fix this without pulling and opening the transmission. The updated hardened wave plate and matching snap ring are inexpensive parts, but getting to them is the whole job. Any rebuild that reuses the original-design plate will fail again, and it does not take long. Full breakdown here: 6T70 / 6T75 wave plate failure symptoms and cost.
Pump Wear
The 6T70 uses a variable-displacement vane pump. The slide and vanes wear, the bore ovals, and line pressure falls off at idle and when the fluid is hot. Symptoms are a two to four second delay engaging Drive or Reverse when the car is hot, slipping under light throttle that goes away when you push harder, and a whine that rises with engine speed. Pump repair is mandatory on any 6T70 rebuild that had a wave plate come apart, because the debris went through the pump on its way everywhere else.
1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R Clutch Burn
These two packs carry the most duty. Low line pressure from pump wear, or old and oxidized fluid, and the frictions glaze then burn. Burnt fluid smell plus a slipping 2-3 shift is this. Once a pack is burnt it goes to the bench.
Torque Converter Clutch Shudder
Light-throttle shudder around 40 to 55 mph, like driving over rumble strips, that goes away if you touch the brake or accelerate hard. The TCC lining wears and its debris contaminates the fluid, which then accelerates everything else. A rebuild that reuses the original converter is not a rebuild.
Solenoids and the TEHCM
Pressure control and shift solenoids drift out of spec and set codes like P0776, P0777, P0796 and P0842. Sometimes this is the whole problem and no teardown is needed. Details here: 6T70 shift solenoid replacement cost.
Diagnose Before You Pay for a Teardown
A rebuild quote should never be the first thing you get. Work this list first.
- Pull all codes, transmission module included. Speed sensor codes P0716 and P0717, solenoid codes P0776 and P0796, and TCC codes P0741 all have repairs that are far cheaper than a rebuild. Gear ratio codes P0730 through P0736 mean a clutch pack, and that is a teardown.
- Drive it and map exactly which gears work. This is the highest-value five minutes in the whole diagnosis. Missing 3rd, 5th and reverse while 1, 2, 4 and 6 work is the wave plate, full stop. Losing everything, or slipping in every gear, points at pump and pressure instead.
- Check the fluid. The 6T70 has no dipstick on most applications. Level is checked at the fill/check plug at the correct temperature. Fluid should be red-brown and smell like oil. Black and smelling burnt means friction material is already cooked.
- Drop the pan and read the debris. Fine gray paste is normal wear. Bronze glitter is bushings. Steel chips are hard parts. Black flakes and chunks that look like cardboard are clutch friction, and if you can see wave plate fragments in the pan the diagnosis is over.
- Watch live data on a drive. Input and output shaft speeds, commanded versus actual gear, line pressure, and TCC slip. Commanded 3rd with the input speed running away from the ratio is a slipping 3-5-R pack.
- Check line pressure hot at idle. Low pressure hot with normal pressure cold is the pump giving up. This is the test that separates a solenoid job from a rebuild.

What a Real 6T70 Rebuild Includes
If a quote does not list these, it is not a rebuild, it is a clutch job with a rebuild price tag.
- Transmission removed from the vehicle. On most of these it comes out with the subframe dropped or the engine supported from above, which is why R&R alone is 6 to 8 hours.
- Complete disassembly, cleaning of every passage, and inspection of the case, drums and bores for scoring.
- All frictions and steels replaced, all seals, O-rings, gaskets and sealing rings replaced.
- Updated hardened 3-5-R wave plate and the correct matching snap ring. This is the non-negotiable item.
- Pump rebuilt or replaced with the updated slide, vanes and seals.
- Remanufactured or new torque converter. Never the original one, because it holds contaminated fluid and worn lining that a flush does not remove.
- Valve body cleaned, checked for bore wear, solenoids tested or replaced.
- New filter, new pan gasket, refill with genuine DEXRON VI, level set at temperature.
- Adaptive relearn after installation, then a road test through all six gears at multiple throttle positions.
Ask specifically about the wave plate and the converter when getting quotes. A shop that lists both without being asked is the one to use.
When to Buy a Reman Unit Instead
Rebuild if the failure is contained and caught early. Buy a remanufactured unit when:
- The case or drums are scored. A rebuild into damaged hard parts is money set on fire. Reman units come on a fresh core.
- The pan was full of metal. Widespread contamination means the pump, the valve body and the converter are all compromised. Fixing each of those individually approaches the price of a reman.
- The vehicle is a heavy crossover with over 150,000 miles. A reman with a 3 year 100,000 mile parts and labor warranty at $3,600 to $5,500 installed beats a $3,800 rebuild with a 12 month warranty.
- You need the vehicle back fast. A reman swap is 8 to 11 hours of labor and the part is on a shelf. A bench rebuild is often three to five days.
- The shop cannot confirm they use the updated wave plate. Then their rebuild is a countdown, and you should buy the unit that already has the fix in it.
Rebuild if it is a clean wave plate failure caught before the fluid went black, the case is good, and the shop lists updated parts. That path is typically $400 to $900 cheaper and you keep your original case and calibration.
Parts You Will Need

How much does a 6T70 rebuild cost in 2026?
$3,200 to $4,800 at an independent shop including removal, bench rebuild, a remanufactured converter, fluid and reinstallation. A reman unit installed is $3,600 to $5,500. DIY parts run $900 to $1,800 with the converter, plus 18 to 30 hours of your time.
Why does the 6T70 lose 3rd, 5th and reverse?
The 3-5-R wave plate cracks in the 3-5-Reverse clutch housing. All three of those gears use that one clutch pack, so they disappear together while 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th keep working. It requires a teardown, and the updated hardened wave plate and snap ring have to be used on reassembly or it will do it again.
Is it cheaper to rebuild a 6T70 or install a reman?
On a clean, early wave plate failure a rebuild is usually $400 to $900 cheaper and keeps your original case. If the pump is damaged, the case is scored, or the pan was full of metal, the reman with a 3 year warranty is the better value, because a rebuild into that condition frequently comes back.
What causes delayed engagement and slipping when hot?
Pump wear. The variable displacement vane pump's slide and vanes wear, so line pressure drops at idle and when the fluid is hot and thin. You get a delay going into Drive or Reverse when hot, and light-throttle slipping that clears under harder acceleration. A pump repair is standard on any correct 6T70 rebuild.
Which vehicles use the 6T70?
Chevrolet Malibu, Impala, Equinox and Traverse; GMC Acadia and Terrain; Buick LaCrosse, Regal and Enclave; Cadillac SRX and XTS; Saturn Outlook and Vue, roughly 2007 to 2019 depending on model. The 6T75 is the higher-torque version with the same weak points.
How long should a rebuilt 6T70 last?
With the updated wave plate and snap ring, a repaired or replaced pump, a new converter, and DEXRON VI changed every 45,000 to 60,000 miles, 120,000 miles or more is reasonable. Rebuilds that reuse the original wave plate or the original converter commonly fail again inside 30,000 miles.
