The AOD (Automatic Overdrive) is Ford's answer to the 700R4 - 4-speed with lockup converter, fuel economy upgrade over the C6. Common in 80s/90s Ford trucks and Fox-body Mustangs. The AOD-E (electronic) and 4R70W came after. Parts cross-reference partially with newer 4R70W.
