Honda's continuously variable transmission uses a steel push-belt running between two variable pulleys. The fluid is not just lubrication, it is the friction medium that lets the belt grip the pulleys without slipping. That is why CVT fluid is so picky: get the friction coefficient wrong and the belt either slips (wear, eventual failure) or grabs unevenly (the judder and shudder Honda CVT owners complain about). This is the opposite of an engine, where any decent oil mostly works.
The correct fluid for nearly every modern Honda CVT is Honda HCF-2. Older Honda CVTs (some early Civics, Insight, and the first-generation small CVTs) used HCF-1. HCF-2 is not backward compatible with HCF-1 vehicles, and HCF-1 must never go in an HCF-2 transmission. Confirm which your car calls for in the owner's manual or under the hood before you buy a thing.
HCF-2 vs HCF-1 vs Generic CVT Fluid
| Fluid | Use In | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Honda HCF-2 | Most 2014+ Civic, Accord, HR-V, CR-V CVT, Fit | The current spec. Use this unless the manual says HCF-1. |
| Honda HCF-1 | Older/early Honda CVTs (check manual) | Being phased out. Not interchangeable with HCF-2. |
| Generic "multi-CVT" fluid | Nothing, if you want it to last | Friction profile rarely matches Honda's. Common cause of judder. |
People reach for a bottle of bargain "fits most CVTs" fluid to save money. On a Honda CVT it is a false economy. The judder it causes feels exactly like a failing transmission and sends people to a dealer for a multi-thousand-dollar quote when the real problem was the fluid. If you already did this, drain and fill with genuine HCF-2 two or three times to dilute the wrong fluid out, then re-evaluate.
Capacity by Model (Drain-and-Fill)
A CVT drain-and-fill does not empty the whole unit, so you replace roughly 3.0 to 3.5 quarts at a time. The full dry capacity is larger; that only matters after a repair. Always verify against your manual.
| Model | Drain & Fill (approx) | Fluid |
|---|---|---|
| Civic (2014+) | ~3.0-3.2 qt | HCF-2 |
| Accord (2018+) | ~3.2-3.5 qt | HCF-2 |
| CR-V (2015+) | ~3.2-3.5 qt | HCF-2 |
| HR-V | ~3.0 qt | HCF-2 |
| Fit (2015+) | ~2.8-3.0 qt | HCF-2 |
Tip: do the drain-and-fill, drive it, then repeat in a few hundred miles if the original fluid was dark. Two lighter services beat one and bring the fresh-fluid ratio up faster than a single drain.
What to Buy
The safest choice is genuine Honda HCF-2, period. If you buy aftermarket, buy only a fluid that explicitly states it meets Honda HCF-2 on the label, not just "for CVTs."

You will also want a fluid pump to fill through the fill plug, and a fresh drain washer.

Can I use generic CVT fluid if it says it fits Honda?
Only if the label explicitly states it meets the HCF-2 specification, not just "compatible with" or "suitable for" Honda CVTs. Vague marketing language is the trap. When in doubt, use genuine HCF-2.
How often should I change Honda CVT fluid?
Severe-service intervals (towing, heat, stop-and-go, hills) call for changes far sooner than the "lifetime" myth. Many independent shops recommend a drain-and-fill every 25,000 to 30,000 miles to keep a Honda CVT healthy.
Will fresh fluid fix CVT judder?
If the judder is recent and the fluid is old or wrong, often yes, fresh HCF-2 (sometimes two services) clears it. If the belt or pulleys are already worn, fluid will not undo mechanical damage.
