Case Study: The 6L80E That Wasn't a Torque Converter

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

2014 Silverado 1500, 6.0L, 6L80E. 112,000 miles. Customer complaint: shudder at 45–55 mph under light throttle, especially on warm days. Previous shop had already told him it was the torque converter and quoted $1,800 for R&R plus a remanufactured converter. First thing I did was connect a scanner and watch TCC slip speed during the shudder event. At 50 mph, light throttle, TCC commanded on — slip speed was reading 180–220 RPM. That's not a locked converter. But before condemning the converter, I looked at TFT: 238°F. That's high for highway cruise on a mild day with no towing. Not in shutdown range, but elevated.
