P0751 and P0756 on 4WD Silverados: Sorting Transfer Case From Transmission Codes

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

P0751 (Shift Solenoid A Performance or Stuck Off) and P0756 (Shift Solenoid B Performance or Stuck Off) on a 4WD Silverado or Sierra are codes that show up in the transmission module but can have causes that branch in multiple directions. Most shops jump straight to the solenoid pack and replace it. Sometimes that fixes it. Sometimes it doesn't, and then you're having an awkward conversation with the customer about why it's still doing it after they already paid for a solenoid replacement. Before you replace anything, do the mechanical baseline. Check line pressure. P0751 and P0756 are pressure-dependent codes — they set when the TCM commands a shift and doesn't see the expected gear ratio change or the expected hydraulic pressure response. A solenoid can be electrically functional and still trigger these codes if line pressure is low enough that the solenoid can't adequately move the valve it's controlling. If your line pressure is 10 to 15 PSI below spec at idle, the solenoid pack is not your primary problem. The pressure issue is.

Transmission Pressure Test Kit

Mechanical Baseline

P0751 and P0756 require a pressure check before parts are ordered. If line pressure at idle is low, no solenoid pack in the world will fix the shift quality issue. Pressure testing takes 15 minutes and gives you a clear picture of the hydraulic system before you commit to a diagnosis path.

Service Fluid

On any P0751/P0756 diagnosis, a fluid condition check is part of the intake process. Dark, oxidized fluid causes pressure regulation issues that contribute to these codes. A fluid service as part of the diagnostic baseline costs the customer nothing extra and improves your diagnostic accuracy.
