Every gas-engine Chrysler Pacifica (2017–present) uses the 948TE nine-speed automatic — Chrysler's badge for the ZF 9HP48 transverse 9-speed. It is the same basic gearbox family that gave the Jeep Cherokee, Renegade, and 200 a rocky start. Chrysler spent years refining the shift software, so a late Pacifica behaves far better than an early one, but the underlying hardware and its weak points are consistent.

The Pacifica Hybrid is different: it uses an eFlite electrically variable transmission (EVT) paired with the 3.6L Atkinson V6, not the 948TE. Its issues are a separate story, covered lower on this page.

Problems by Year (948TE Gas Models)

YearsMain Complaints
2017–2018Harsh/clunky low-speed shifts, hesitation, occasional limp mode, jerky 1-2 and 2-3. Multiple software reflashes issued.
2019–2020Improved after reflashes but still some hesitation and hard downshifts; valve body / solenoid codes at higher miles.
2021–2023Facelift models much smoother; isolated shudder and limp-mode complaints, usually software or a single solenoid.
2024–2026Mature calibration; fewest complaints. Watch fluid service intervals.

What Actually Goes Wrong on the 948TE

Harsh and hesitant shifting

The most common Pacifica complaint is not a broken part — it is shift quality. The 9-speed hunts between its many ratios, clunks at low speed, and hesitates when you tip into the throttle. A large share of these are cured by the latest TCM software update at the dealer. Before you spend a dime on parts, confirm the transmission is running the newest calibration.

Limp mode and mechatronic / solenoid faults

The 948TE controls shifts through a mechatronic valve body with integrated solenoids. When a solenoid sticks or the valve body wears, the van drops into limp mode (locked in a single gear) and lights the wrench or check-engine light. This is the classic hardware failure on these transmissions and it usually shows a solenoid or pressure code.

Fluid degradation

The 948TE is sensitive to fluid condition and demands the correct ZF-spec ATF. Overdue or wrong fluid brings on shudder and hard shifts. A drain-and-fill with the right spec is the cheapest thing that fixes real problems.

The Pacifica Hybrid (eFlite EVT)

The Pacifica Hybrid does not have the 948TE. It uses the eFlite electrically variable transmission — a planetary gearset with two motor-generators, no conventional gear shifts. So it never has the 9-speed's hard-shift complaints. Its historically notable issue was a battery/hybrid-system recall rather than a gearbox failure. If you are shopping a used Pacifica Hybrid, verify recall completion, not transmission software.

2026 Repair Costs

RepairTypical Cost
TCM software reflash (shift quality)$0–$180 (often covered under TSB)
Fluid & filter service$250–$450
Solenoid / mechatronic repair$600–$1,400
Valve body / mechatronic replacement$1,200–$2,200
Full rebuild (948TE)$3,000–$4,500
Remanufactured 9-speed installed$4,000–$6,000

Most Pacifica "transmission problems" are software or a single solenoid, not a dead gearbox. Diagnose before you agree to a rebuild — see what a proper diagnosis should cost.

FAQ

Which Pacifica years have the worst transmission?

2017–2018 gas models drew the most hard-shift and hesitation complaints, most of which were later addressed by software. Later years shift noticeably better.

Is the Pacifica 9-speed reliable?

The 948TE earned a rough reputation early from shift quality, but with current software, correct fluid, and on-time service it holds up. Neglected or wrong-fluid units are the ones that fail early.

Does the Pacifica Hybrid have the same transmission problems?

No. The Hybrid uses the eFlite EVT, not the 948TE, so it does not share the 9-speed's hard-shift issues. Its notable history was a hybrid-battery recall.

Can a fluid change fix Pacifica shifting problems?

It can fix shudder and hard shifts caused by degraded or wrong fluid. It will not fix a shift-quality issue that needs a software update or a failed solenoid. Do the software check and fluid service first, in that order.
