Most modern Chargers and Challengers (2012-up, plus the RWD 300) run the ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic — branded 845RE on the 3.6L V6 and 8HP70/8HP90 on the 5.7L, 6.4L, and Hellcat cars. It is an excellent transmission, but it is not a dipstick-and-pour job. There is no dipstick, the pan integrates the filter, and the fill is done to a specific fluid temperature. That procedure is exactly why the shop bill is higher than a plain drain-and-fill on an older car.
Mopar for years called this fluid "fill for life." In the real world, if you tow, sit in traffic, drive hard, or plan to keep the car past 100,000 miles, a fluid and filter service every 60,000-70,000 miles is cheap insurance against the shudder and harsh-shift complaints these units develop when the fluid degrades.
2026 Fluid Change Cost Ranges
| Service | Where | Total Cost (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Pan drop, filter, fluid (drain-and-fill) | Independent shop | $300-$500 |
| Pan drop, filter, fluid | Dodge dealer | $450-$700 |
| Full fluid exchange / flush | Shop with 8HP machine | $450-$800 |
| DIY (fluid + pan/filter kit) | Your garage | $180-$320 in parts |
A pan drop only exchanges roughly half the fluid because a large amount stays in the torque converter and cooler. A proper full exchange gets nearly all of it but costs more and uses more fluid. On a neglected high-mileage 8HP, do a pan-and-filter first — do not machine-flush an old, contaminated unit.
Why It Costs More Than A Normal Fluid Change
- Integrated pan/filter. The filter is part of the plastic pan, so every real service replaces the whole pan assembly, not a cheap paper filter.
- Temperature-based fill. You fill, run the trans, and check the level with a scan tool at a target fluid temperature (roughly 100-120°F window). Overfill or underfill and it shifts wrong or foams.
- Exact fluid spec. The 8HP wants ZF LifeguardFluid 8 (or the Mopar-approved equivalent). The wrong ATF is a direct cause of 8HP shudder.
- No dipstick. There is a fill plug and an overflow standpipe, not a tube you pour down. It is a from-below job.
The Exact Fluid And Parts
Use only ZF LifeguardFluid 8 or a fluid explicitly listed as meeting ZF's 8HP spec and Chrysler's approval. Do not substitute generic multi-vehicle ATF, ATF+4, or older 8HP LifeguardFluid 6 — the friction characteristics are different and the wrong one causes converter shudder. Plan on roughly 5-7 quarts for a pan drop and 9-10+ quarts for a full exchange depending on model.

Shop Gearbox Insider →How Often, And When To Just Do It
- Severe use (towing, track, heat, stop-and-go): service every 40,000-60,000 miles.
- Normal use: every 60,000-70,000 miles is a sensible interval despite the "lifetime fill" label.
- Buying a used Charger with unknown history: do a pan-and-filter now regardless of mileage — you do not know what is in there.
- Already shuddering or harsh-shifting: a correct-spec fluid service is the first thing to try before anyone quotes a valve body or rebuild.
FAQ
Does the Charger 8HP really have lifetime fluid?
That is the marketing label, not good advice for a car you keep. Heat degrades ATF, and degraded fluid is the leading cause of 8HP shudder and harsh shifts. Servicing it periodically is far cheaper than a valve body or rebuild.
Can I do the 8HP fluid change myself?
Yes, if you have a scan tool that reads transmission fluid temperature and a fill pump. The catch is the temperature-based fill — without a way to read fluid temp you cannot set the level correctly.
Will fresh fluid fix an 8HP shudder?
Often, if the shudder is early and caused by degraded or wrong fluid. A correct-spec LifeguardFluid 8 service is the cheapest first step. If it persists, the next suspects are the valve body and mechatronic unit.
