I've been wrenching on Ford transmissions for over 15 years here in Ohio, and there's one thing that comes up again and again when I pull a 6R80 or 10R80 out of a truck that came in with complaints. The fluid is either wrong, old, or both. Ford's modern automatics — the 6R80 in F-150s and Mustangs, the 10R80 that replaced it — are genuinely well-engineered units. But they're also precision-built, and that means they're less forgiving of neglect than older transmissions like the 4R100. The tolerances are tighter. The solenoid packs are sensitive. And the torque converter clutch (TCC) on both units will start shuddering the moment the fluid loses its friction modifier chemistry.
