If you own a GM crossover or sedan with the 6T70 or 6T75 — the Chevy Malibu, Impala, Traverse and Equinox, the GMC Acadia and Terrain, the Buick Enclave and LaCrosse, the Cadillac XTS — and you feel a rumble-strip vibration cruising at light throttle, you have torque converter clutch shudder. It is the single most common complaint on this transmission family, and the good news is that in most cars it is a fluid problem before it is a hardware problem.

The trap is that a shop unfamiliar with these units will quote a torque converter or a rebuild for a car that needs a $250 fluid exchange. This page tells you how to know which one you actually have.

What the Shudder Actually Is

The torque converter clutch (TCC) locks the engine mechanically to the transmission to kill slip and save fuel once you're up to speed. On the 6T70/6T75 the TCC applies early and often, even at part throttle in the 40-55 mph range. When the Dexron VI fluid degrades, its friction modifiers break down, and the TCC grabs-and-releases instead of holding smoothly. That rapid grab/slip is the vibration you feel — owners describe it as driving over a rumble strip or a shiver through the seat.

Ignored, the shudder itself destroys the converter clutch lining. What started as a cheap fluid fix becomes a converter job because you drove on it for another 20,000 miles.

The Fix, in Order of Cost

Step 1: Full Dexron VI Fluid Exchange (Do This First)

A drain-and-fill is not enough — these units hold roughly 9-10 quarts and a single drain only pulls out a few. Do a full exchange (multiple drains or a machine flush) with genuine Dexron VI, plus a filter. In a large share of early-shudder cars this alone clears it. It is the cheapest, highest-odds fix.

Step 2: Add a Friction Modifier / Shudder Fix

If a fresh full exchange leaves a trace of shudder but the converter isn't destroyed, a quality torque-converter-shudder additive can restore smooth lockup. This is a legitimate bandage on a marginal converter, not a cure for a wrecked one.

Step 3: Replace the Torque Converter

If shudder returns quickly after a full exchange, or the fluid comes out dark and burnt, the converter clutch lining is gone. The transmission has to come out to swap the converter. This is the expensive path — and the one you avoid by doing Step 1 before the damage is done.

Cost to Fix — 2026

Fix2026 CostOdds It Solves Shudder
Full Dexron VI exchange + filter$150 – $350High, if caught early
Fluid exchange + additive$180 – $400Good on a marginal converter
Torque converter replacement$1,200 – $2,000Definitive when lining is gone
Rebuild (if slipping too)$2,400 – $3,800Only if internals are also worn

How to Tell Fluid From Converter

Bottom line: run a full Dexron VI exchange before you spend on a converter. It is cheap, it is the correct first step, and it fixes more of these cars than any shop wants to admit.

FAQ

What causes 6T70/6T75 torque converter shudder?

The torque converter clutch grabs and slips during lockup, almost always because degraded Dexron VI fluid and a glazed clutch surface. Felt as a rumble-strip vibration at light throttle around 40-55 mph.

Can a fluid change fix 6T70 shudder?

Often yes, if caught early. A full Dexron VI exchange clears TCC shudder in many cars before the clutch lining is destroyed. If it comes right back, the converter is worn out.

How much does it cost to fix 6T75 shudder?

A full fluid exchange is $150-$350. If the converter must be replaced, $1,200-$2,000 installed since the transmission comes out. Catching it at the fluid stage saves you the converter bill.

Will an additive alone fix it?

Only as a bandage on a marginal converter, and only paired with fresh fluid. It will not save a converter whose clutch lining is already gone.
