The 8L90 is GM's 8-speed automatic, introduced in 2015 in the Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, and Corvette. It replaced the 6L80 in most half-ton applications and improved fuel economy through tighter gear spacing and aggressive TCC lockup. It also shipped with a well-documented shudder problem that caught a lot of early owners off guard — and sent them to shops that didn't understand what they were dealing with. The shudder on the 8L90 is TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) shudder. It occurs at light throttle between 40–50 mph when the converter is in partial lockup. It feels like a mild vibration or drivetrain buzz that happens at the same speed range every time. Consistent, repeatable, and easy to confuse with a tire balance issue or exhaust resonance until you start paying attention to when it occurs. GM issued TSB PIP5291C and several related updates specifically addressing this condition — the fix is a transmission fluid exchange to Dexron HP, a higher-performance ATF GM released to address the friction characteristics the 8L90's TCC requires under lockup load.

GM Dexron HP ATF
Search AmazonThe TSB-specified replacement fluid for 8L90-equipped trucks with TCC shudder. Dexron HP has a revised friction modifier package versus Dexron VI that directly addresses the 8L90's lockup clutch engagement. A full fluid exchange takes approximately 10–11 quarts. Do not substitute Dexron VI for a shudder complaint — the friction chemistry is different and the shudder will not resolve.

If slip persists after the Dexron HP exchange, you have a mechanical TCC issue and need that data before authorizing further work.
