Spring ATF Service on Your GM: The Drain-and-Fill vs. Flush Debate

Every spring I get the same question from GM truck owners: should I do a drain-and-fill or a full flush? The short answer is drain-and-fill, and the reasoning matters — especially on the 6L80, 8L90, and 4L60E units that have accumulated some mileage over the winter. A transmission flush — where a machine is connected to the cooler lines and all the fluid is exchanged under pressure — sounds more thorough. And on a well-maintained, low-mileage transmission it's largely harmless. On a higher-mileage GM transmission that hasn't been serviced on schedule, a full flush creates a real risk: the hydraulic pressure from the flush machine can dislodge varnish deposits and fine metallic debris that have been sitting in the pan and valve body passages. That debris gets pushed into the solenoid bores and shift circuits. You flush a 6L80 with 90,000 miles of neglected fluid, and two weeks later the owner is back with P0751 or P0776. The flush didn't cause the underlying wear — but it stirred up the evidence of it.
