Honda Transmission Rule #1: Never Use Anything But DW-1

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

If there's one brand where fluid selection is truly non-negotiable, it's Honda. I've seen more Honda transmissions damaged by wrong fluid than almost any other brand — and almost every time, it wasn't deliberate negligence. Someone went to a quick lube, the tech grabbed a "multi-vehicle" ATF off the shelf, and it went into a Honda that needed Honda DW-1. Six months later the owner is in my shop wondering why their Accord shudders on every light-throttle acceleration. Honda's automatic transmissions — whether you're talking about the MLYA in an older Accord, the MRPA in a CR-V, the BAYA in a newer Accord, or the BTWA CVT — are all engineered around Honda's proprietary ATF chemistry. Honda DW-1 replaced the older Z-1 fluid and is the current required spec across essentially all Honda and Acura automatic applications. It is not a conventional ATF formulation. Honda's friction modifier package, viscosity characteristics, and additive chemistry are specific to Honda's clutch pack and valve body designs.

Honda DW-1 ATF

Search Amazon

The only fluid that belongs in a Honda or Acura automatic transmission. Required for all MLYA, MRPA, BAYA, BTWA CVT, and related applications. Pick up 4 quarts for a drain-and-fill service with a spare — the pan holds about 3 quarts but having extra on hand is always smart.

BlueDriver Bluetooth OBD2 Scanner

$89.95

If your Honda has already been serviced with the wrong fluid and you're seeing shift complaints or a shudder, scan for codes before and after your DW-1 service. P0700 (TCM fault) and P0740 (TCC solenoid circuit) are common codes on Hondas that have been run on incorrect ATF. Knowing what's stored helps you confirm whether a fluid change resolves the issue.

Lucas Oil Transmission Fix

$14.87

If wrong-fluid contamination has caused light shudder or shift harshness in a Honda automatic, a DW-1 drain-and-fill combined with a small amount of Lucas Trans Fix can help recondition clutch surfaces during the relearn period. Use only alongside a proper DW-1 service — never as a substitute for the correct fluid.
