Fluid Specs Across Three Wrangler Transmissions — Including the ZF Spec That Catches Shops Off Guard

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

Three transmission types means three different fluid specifications. Getting any of these wrong causes damage — and on the 8HP75 specifically, the wrong fluid can destroy the mechatronic unit within a single service interval. Let's go through each one. NSG370 Manual Transmission (JK): Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant (MTL) or an equivalent GL-4 75W-85 gear oil. Do not use GL-5 — the EP additive package in GL-5 is corrosive to the brass synchronizer rings in the NSG370 and will accelerate synchronizer wear significantly. This is a common mistake. Many shops reach for 75W-90 GL-5 because it's what they stock. On this unit, that's the wrong call. Capacity is approximately 2.5 quarts. Service interval: 30,000 miles for off-road use, 60,000 miles street use.

Recommended Products

ZF Lifeguard Fluid 8 — 1 Liter (Mopar ZF 8&9 Speed ATF)

The only correct fluid for the JL Wrangler 8HP75 — using any substitute risks mechatronic O-ring damage that results in a $1,200+ repair.
