Case Study: 8HP75 Water Ingestion on a JL Rubicon — What the Data Showed Before the Pan Came Off

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

2020 Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon, 3.6L, 8HP75, 41,000 miles. Customer complaint: intermittent harsh shifts, occasional failure to engage Drive after starting cold, warning light on. The Jeep had been through two deep water crossings two weeks prior — customer mentioned it casually, didn't think it was related. I pulled codes first: P0944 (hydraulic pressure unit loss), P0826 (up/down shift switch circuit), and P17F0 (transmission control system — voltage). Three codes from three different circuits simultaneously is a pattern. When you see multiple unrelated circuits failing at the same time on an 8HP75, the first thing you look for is a common cause — and the most common common cause is water in the mechatronic unit.

8HP75 Integrated Oil Pan and Filter Assembly — OEM Spec

Replace this assembly any time the pan is removed on the 8HP75 — the sealant is single-use and reusing the pan risks an external leak that introduces more contamination.
