42RLE in the JK Wrangler: 2-4 Band, Solenoid Pack, and the Failures That Keep Coming Back

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

The 42RLE is a 4-speed automatic that Chrysler put behind the 3.8L and 3.6L V6 in JK Wranglers from 2007 through 2018. It's a decent unit for street use, but it was never particularly well-suited for the off-road use that most Wrangler owners actually subject their trucks to. The combination of heat cycles from off-road use, the weight of modified vehicles, and the fluid service neglect common with Wrangler owners creates a specific failure pattern that shops doing Wrangler work will see regularly. The 2-4 band is the primary failure component on the 42RLE. The band is a friction-wrapped servo-applied band that holds the 2nd and 4th gear drum, and it's adjusted by a mechanical servo piston. Over time, the band wear causes the servo travel to exceed the adjustment range, and the band starts slipping before the adjustment self-compensates. The failure shows up as a slip or flare in 2nd gear, often during light throttle acceleration at low speeds, and a similar complaint in 4th gear during light cruise. Because these symptoms overlap with solenoid and TCC issues, many shops miss the band as the primary failure and replace solenoid packs instead.

Jeep/Chrysler Enhanced Codes

42RLE shift solenoid codes require TCM module access beyond generic OBD2. The BlueDriver supports enhanced Jeep/Chrysler codes and live transmission data. Pulling solenoid performance data before deciding between a band vs solenoid diagnosis saves your customer from unnecessary parts replacement.

Transmission Pressure Test Kit

Hydraulic Baseline

After band adjustment and solenoid pack checks, confirm line pressure is within spec before closing the diagnosis. Low line pressure on the 42RLE indicates pump wear or valve body issues that will cause the repaired band to wear faster than normal. Don't send the truck out without this verification step.

42RLE Teardown Tool

If the diagnosis leads to a band replacement or clutch pack inspection, the 42RLE has multiple snap ring retained components in the clutch stacks. A quality snap ring pliers set is required for clean disassembly without damaging clutch drum bores on a unit that may otherwise be reusable.
