Fluid Specs for the RE5R05A and Nissan CVT — The Interval Nissan Doesn't Advertise

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

Fluid maintenance is more directly tied to transmission longevity on these Nissan units than on almost any other platform in this series. The CVT in particular is acutely sensitive to fluid condition — degraded CVT fluid is the single most common precursor to belt and pulley wear. Let's go through both units. RE5R05A (4.0L Frontier and Pathfinder): Nissan spec is Matic-S or Matic-J fluid depending on build date — Matic-J superseded Matic-S in 2006 and is backward compatible. Do not substitute Dexron VI or any generic multi-vehicle ATF. The RE5R05A's clutch pack friction material and TCC apply surface are formulated for Matic fluid chemistry. Generic ATF will cause TCC shudder within 15,000–20,000 miles of the service, even if the converter was in good condition before the fill. Total capacity is approximately 10.5 quarts; a pan drain removes about 5 quarts. Nissan's published service interval is 60,000 miles — for any truck used for towing or off-road use, 30,000 miles is the correct interval.

Nissan NS-3 CVT Fluid — Genuine OEM (1 Quart)

The only correct fluid for Nissan JF011E and JF016E CVT units — using any substitute risks belt slip that leads to a complete CVT replacement.
