Valve Body Weak Spots on the RE5R05A — And the CVT Step Motor Failure Pattern

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

Two different units, two different failure mechanisms at the control hardware level. The RE5R05A has a conventional valve body you can service on the bench. The CVT's primary control weakness is the step motor — a different kind of problem entirely. RE5R05A Valve Body: The primary wear point is the pressure control solenoid A (PCS-A) bore — the same pattern we've seen on other Jatco units. The bore wears oval over time and the spool valve can't maintain commanded pressure. P0868 (fluid pressure low) is the typical resulting code. Measure the bore before condemning the solenoid: spec clearance is 0.0008–0.0015 inches. Over 0.002 inches, the bore needs a sleeve kit.
