Frontier and Xterra RE4R01A Service: Parts Availability, What Fails, and What to Tell the Owner

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

The RE4R01A is an older 4-speed automatic that Nissan used in the Frontier and Xterra through the early 2000s, and these trucks are aging into their third decade now. They're well-loved — the Frontier and Xterra have a dedicated ownership community — and the people who own them are generally mechanically inclined and attached to their vehicles. When one of these trucks comes in for transmission work, the conversation about parts availability and realistic expectations for an aging platform matters. The RE4R01A is a hydraulically controlled unit with electronic shift control through a separate TCM. The failure modes are consistent with the platform's age: the governor pressure solenoid and the overdrive solenoid are the most common electrical failures. The governor pressure solenoid in particular is a well-documented failure point — it controls 1-2 and 2-3 shift points and when it fails, the transmission either stays stuck in first gear or loses overdrive, depending on how it fails. The part is still available through Nissan and through aftermarket suppliers, and it's a relatively straightforward replacement that doesn't require a full transmission removal on most applications.

RE4R01A Diagnostic Access

Enhanced Nissan scan coverage for the RE4R01A TCM helps you pull governor pressure solenoid fault codes and shift performance data before you commit to a solenoid replacement. Not all generic OBD2 tools access the RE4R01A TCM correctly — verify coverage for your year range before relying on it for diagnosis.

Transmission Pressure Test Kit

Governor Pressure Verification

On the RE4R01A, governor pressure testing confirms whether the governor solenoid failure is electrical or whether there's a mechanical issue in the governor circuit affecting line pressure and shift point behavior. Line pressure testing before solenoid replacement prevents replacing a good solenoid on a low-pressure hydraulic system.

Snap Ring Pliers Set

RE4R01A Bench Tool

The RE4R01A overdrive clutch pack and TCC service require snap ring pliers for the clutch pack retaining rings. Any rebuild or clutch pack inspection on this unit needs the right tools to avoid bore damage. The same set you use for other transmission work covers the RE4R01A without additional tooling.
