Erratic shift points, harsh 1-2 shift, 3-4 flare, no overdrive lockup

Run a resistance check before condemning the solenoid. Bad wiring, corroded harness pins, or a failing PCM driver can cause identical symptoms.

Replacement procedure

Drop pan (smaller than 68RFE — easier job)
Locate governor solenoid on the valve body driver side
Disconnect 2-pin harness
Remove 10mm retaining bolt
Pull solenoid straight out
Lubricate O-rings with fresh ATF+4
Torque bolt to 12 ft-lbs
Refill — 48RE takes 6-7 quarts on pan drop
