Ram 2500 and 3500 owners are often contractors, ranchers, or farmers — people who need their truck back fast. A 68RFE job that sits two days waiting on an OD clutch pack or a solenoid pack costs you goodwill you won't get back. Here's what I keep stocked when the shop sees diesel trucks regularly. — Updated solenoid pack (Sonnax or OEM updated): Every 68RFE rebuild needs one. Keep at least one on the shelf. At $280–$380 they're not cheap to carry, but a job that waits three days for a solenoid pack is worse than the carrying cost. — Alto Red Eagle overdrive clutch pack: The most common mechanical failure on Cummins applications. Alto's Red Eagle friction material runs hotter and lasts longer than OEM. Stock one kit — it covers both the frictions and steels for the OD pack. — Low/reverse accumulator spring and piston seal kit: $20–$30, fixes the cold harsh engagement complaint. Keep three on hand — this comes up constantly. — Sonnax line pressure regulator valve kit (22771-01K): One on the shelf. When low line pressure is confirmed on the bench, you want to do the valve body work same day. — Separator plate with gaskets: Do not reuse a separator plate. Keep one new unit in stock — they run $35–$55 and the job isn't complete without a fresh one. — Master overhaul kit (frictions, steels, seals): A full Raybestos or Alto master kit for the 68RFE. When the pan comes off showing clutch material, you need to be able to quote a complete job with a fast turnaround. — External spin-on filter: The 68RFE has an external filter that many shops miss. Keep two — one for the service and one spare. — Mopar ATF+4, case of 12 quarts: You need 17+ quarts for a complete fill. Don't run out mid-job.
