Ram 4WD trucks with the NV273 or NV241 transfer cases produce a specific pattern of misdiagnosis that costs shops time and customers money. The transfer case encoder motor, the range switch, and the transfer case control module all communicate with the TCM, and when any of those signals get confused, the TCM logs codes that look like transmission faults. I see shops replace solenoid packs and valve bodies on trucks where the actual problem was a failing transfer case encoder motor or a corroded range switch connector. The NV273 and NV241 transfer cases use an electric shift motor with a position feedback sensor. When the position sensor starts reading incorrect range positions — which happens from vibration, heat, and connector corrosion on high-mileage trucks — the TCM receives range position data that doesn't match what gear ratio it's commanding. The TCM interprets this as a shift execution failure and sets codes in the transmission module. The codes look like solenoid performance faults or ratio errors, and if you scan only the TCM module without checking the transfer case module, you'll chase the wrong system entirely.
