The first thing to understand: Subaru's Lineartronic is a chain-driven CVT, not a belt-driven one like most CVTs. The chain (technically a push chain, built by LuK) does not snap the way people fear, but the valve body, the step-motor that controls the variator pulleys, and the torque converter lock-up clutch all wear, and Subaru does not sell internal repair parts to the public. When the dealer condemns one, they replace the whole unit. That is why these jobs land between $4,000 and $9,000.
There are two main families. The TR580 is the high-torque chain CVT behind the 2.5L and turbo 2.4L engines (Outback, Forester, Legacy, Crosstrek). The TR690 is the heavier-duty unit behind the 3.6L six and the Ascent's 2.4 turbo. They are not interchangeable, and that drives the price spread below.
Subaru CVT Replacement Cost by Path (2026)
Three ways to get a working transmission back under the car. The all-in figure includes the unit, fluid (Subaru High Torque CVT Fluid, about $30-40 a quart and the unit takes roughly 12-13 quarts on a full R&R), and labor at 8-11 book hours.
| Path | Unit Price | All-In Installed | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dealer new (factory) | $5,500-7,500 | $7,500-9,500 | 3 yr / 36k |
| Remanufactured | $3,200-4,500 | $5,000-6,800 | 2-3 yr |
| Low-mile used / salvage | $1,400-2,600 | $3,000-4,500 | 30-90 day |
The used route is the gamble. A junkyard TR580 with unknown fluid history can fail the same way the original did within a year. If you go used, insist on under 70k miles, get the VIN to confirm it is the matching ratio, and budget a fresh fluid exchange the day it goes in.
Cost by Model
| Model | CVT | Typical Installed (Reman) |
|---|---|---|
| Forester 2.5 (2014-2018) | TR580 | $5,000-6,200 |
| Outback 2.5 (2015-2019) | TR580 | $5,200-6,500 |
| Crosstrek 2.0 (2018-2022) | TR580 | $4,800-6,000 |
| Legacy 3.6R (2015-2019) | TR690 | $5,800-7,200 |
| Ascent 2.4T (2019-2023) | TR690 | $6,200-7,800 |
Note the 2014-2018 Forester and 2015-2019 Outback were covered by an extended powertrain warranty (10 yr / 100k) tied to a software reflash and a TSB on the valve body. If your vehicle is in that window and under 100k, the dealer may still owe you a repair. Check that before you pay a dime.
Is It Actually the CVT? Five Real Symptoms
Subarus throw a lot of CVT scares that turn out to be cheaper problems. Rule these in before you authorize a $6,000 job.
- Juddering / shuddering at 20-40 mph light throttle. This is the classic Subaru CVT torque-converter lock-up shudder. Often a fluid issue first. A full fluid exchange with genuine High Torque fluid resolves a meaningful share of early shudder cases. Do that before condemning the unit.
- Forward lurch / hesitation from a stop. The step-motor or valve body losing precise pulley control. If a fluid service does not fix it, this is usually terminal.
- P0840 / P0841 / P2764 codes. Fluid pressure sensor and lock-up clutch circuit codes. Pull the codes before guessing.
- Whine that rises with road speed, not engine RPM. Bearing wear inside the case. Terminal.
- Limp mode (stuck at low ratio, RPM pinned). The trans went into protection. Sometimes a sensor, often the variator. Get codes read.
The single highest-value move when you first notice shudder is a complete fluid exchange. It is cheap insurance and it has saved more than a few of these units. Use the correct genuine fluid and the right fill procedure.

Most Subaru CVT failures are condemned without anyone trying a proper fluid exchange. The right tools make that a two-hour driveway job.
Fluid Transfer / Fill Pump
The CVT fills from a side port, not a top dipstick. You need a hand pump to push fluid up into the case. A simple fluid transfer pump turns a frustrating job into a clean one.

Bidirectional Scan Tool
To read the CVT fluid temperature for the correct fill level, and to clear codes after service, you need a scan tool that talks to the TCM, not a basic code reader.

Replace, Reman, or Walk Away?
Run the math against the car's value. A clean 2017 Outback is worth maybe $13,000-16,000 in 2026. A $6,000 reman CVT on a car worth $14k is defensible if the body and engine are solid. The same $6,000 on a 2015 Forester worth $9k with surface rust is throwing good money after bad.
The break point most people use: if the installed CVT cost is more than half the car's clean retail value and the rest of the car has its own problems, sell it as-is and move on. If the car is otherwise sound and you like it, reman is the sweet spot. Avoid dealer-new unless you are still under the extended warranty (in which case it should be free).
FAQ
Can a Subaru CVT be rebuilt instead of replaced?
A handful of specialty CVT shops will open a TR580/TR690, replace the valve body, step-motor, and lock-up clutch, and reuse the case and chain. It can run $3,500-5,000 and is only worth it through a shop that does this volume. Most general shops and all dealers replace the whole unit.
Will a fluid change really stop the shudder?
Sometimes. Early lock-up shudder on these is frequently fluid-related, and a full exchange with genuine High Torque CVT fluid clears a good share of cases. It will not fix a worn variator or a failed step-motor. It is the cheapest first move and worth doing before any big decision.
Is the chain going to snap and strand me?
Very unlikely. The LuK push-chain is robust. What fails on these is the valve body, step-motor, lock-up clutch, and bearings, which give you warning (shudder, whine, hesitation) before they leave you stranded.
