Lineartronic CVT Fluid Spec — The Interval Most Independent Shops Are Getting Wrong

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

The fluid situation on the Subaru Lineartronic is the single most important maintenance topic for this platform, and it's where the most preventable damage originates. Let me be direct about what the correct spec is and why deviating from it causes expensive failures. Fluid specification: Subaru Lineartronic CVT Fluid (CVTF) — also sold as Idemitsu CVT Type-N for Subaru applications. This is a chain-drive CVT fluid, formulated specifically for metal chain-on-pulley friction characteristics. It is not interchangeable with Nissan NS-2/NS-3, Toyota CVT fluid, or any generic multi-vehicle CVT fluid. The chain-drive design requires a higher friction coefficient between the chain pins and pulley surfaces than a push-belt CVT. Using a push-belt CVT fluid in a Lineartronic will cause the chain to micro-slip on the pulleys within 15,000–20,000 miles — chain micro-slip generates metallic debris, which contaminates the remaining fluid, which accelerates pulley bearing wear. This is a compounding failure sequence that ends with a CVT replacement.
