Subaru Lineartronic CVT: The Two Generations and How They Differ for Service and Diagnosis

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

Subaru's Lineartronic CVT — their branded name for the Jatco-designed CVT used in the Outback, Forester, Impreza, Legacy, and Crosstrek — is one of the better-maintained CVT platforms in the market, but it has two distinct generations with enough differences to cause service mistakes if you're not aware of them. Understanding what changed between the first and second generation Lineartronic tells you which fluid, which service procedure, and which failure modes to expect on the vehicle in your bay. The first generation Lineartronic, used from roughly 2010 through 2017 in most Subaru applications, is a conventional push-belt CVT design using the Jatco JF016E or similar architecture. It uses Subaru CVTF-II fluid and has a conventional external filter, an internal filter, and a chain-drive secondary shaft. The first generation unit is more forgiving of fluid condition than many competitors' CVT offerings, but it still has a failure mode related to secondary pulley wear and chain guide degradation on high-mileage units.

Recommended Products

Subaru CVTF-II Fluid

First Generation Lineartronic Fluid

The correct fluid for first-generation Subaru Lineartronic CVT applications. OEM or verified-compatible spec only. The Subaru CVT fluid spec is tightly tied to the chain and pulley surface material in these units — using a generic multi-vehicle CVT fluid in a Subaru Lineartronic is not recommended.

BlueDriver OBD2 Bluetooth Pro Scan Tool

Subaru CVT Diagnostic Access

Enhanced Subaru scan coverage for the Lineartronic TCM gives you CVT-specific fault codes, ratio data, and hydraulic pressure PIDs. Identifying which generation Lineartronic is in the vehicle and what fault codes the TCM is storing is the correct first step on any Subaru CVT complaint.

Mityvac MV7400 Fluid Evacuator

CVT Service Tool

Subaru Lineartronic fluid exchanges are cleaner and faster with a vacuum evacuator. The MV7400 handles the Subaru CVT fluid volume without issue and allows you to pull fluid for inspection before refilling, which is an important quality check on any CVT service.
