Subaru CAN Bus Diagnostics: Reading the CVT Like a Pro

By Dave at Gearbox Insider

If you're diagnosing Subaru CVTs with just a basic code reader, you're working blind. The Lineartronic CVT is one of the most data-rich transmissions on the road today, broadcasting dozens of parameters across the CAN bus in real time — but you need the right scan tool and the knowledge of which PIDs actually matter to take advantage of it. Generic OBD-II scanners will pull basic transmission DTCs, but they miss the manufacturer-specific codes that Subaru uses for CVT-specific faults, and they can't access the critical live data streams that tell you what's actually happening inside the variator. The difference between a $3,500 CVT replacement and a $200 solenoid swap often comes down to whether your scan tool can show you primary and secondary pulley speed data in real time. Investing in Subaru-capable diagnostics is the single highest-ROI purchase you can make if you're doing volume Subaru work.
