If you have a red or brown puddle under the middle of your vehicle, the transmission pan gasket is the first suspect. It is the flat seal between the stamped-steel pan and the bottom of the transmission case, and it is under load every time the pan bolts flex from a heat cycle. Ninety percent of "transmission leaks" people panic about are just a tired pan gasket, a stripped drain plug, or an overtightened pan that warped the flange.
The good news: this is the least expensive transmission repair you will ever pay for. The bad news: a shocking number of shops do it wrong, and a botched pan gasket job leaks again in a few months. Here is what it actually costs and how to make sure it seals once.
Transmission Pan Gasket Cost — 2026 Numbers
| Where | Parts | Labor | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY, gasket only | $10-$25 | $0 | $10-$25 |
| DIY, gasket + filter + fluid | $40-$90 | $0 | $40-$90 |
| Independent shop | $40-$90 | $110-$200 | $150-$290 |
| Dealership | $60-$120 | $180-$280 | $240-$400 |
Most shops will not sell you a pan gasket alone. They bundle it into a "transmission service" because the pan has to come off anyway, and once it is off, changing the filter and fluid costs almost nothing in extra labor. That is fair. Reusing 100,000-mile fluid after you already dropped the pan is false economy.
The labor number swings on one thing: how the pan comes off. A rear-sump car pan with 14 bolts is 30 minutes. A pan buried behind a crossmember, exhaust, or a skid plate on a 4x4 can eat two hours. That is why F-250 and 4Runner quotes look high next to a Camry.
Cork vs Rubber vs Reusable — Buy the Right Gasket
The gasket you install decides whether this job lasts one season or ten years. There are three kinds and they are not interchangeable in quality.
Cork / Cork-Composite
The cheap OE-replacement gasket in most parts-store kits. Works fine if torqued correctly, but cork compresses over time and shrinks when it dries out. Overtighten it and it splits; undertighten it and it weeps. This is what leaks again in a year when someone gorillas the bolts.
Molded Rubber / Fiber
A step up. Holds torque better, more forgiving of a slightly warped flange. Many OEM pan gaskets from the factory are this style. A solid middle choice for a daily driver.
Reusable Bonded (Steel-Core Rubber)
A rigid steel carrier with molded rubber sealing beads, like a Fel-Pro or ATP reusable gasket. These do not shrink, do not need retorquing, and can be reused across multiple fluid changes. If you plan to service the trans yourself every 30k, this pays for itself the second time. This is what we install on anything we want to seal and forget.

Why Pan Gaskets Leak Again — The Real Causes
- Overtightened bolts. The number-one cause. People crank pan bolts to 40+ ft-lb like they are lug nuts. Pan bolts are almost always 8-14 ft-lb. Over-torque warps the flange, and a warped flange never seals with any gasket.
- Warped pan flange from a previous overtighten. Once the thin steel flange bows between the bolt holes, no new gasket fixes it. You lay the pan on a flat surface, tap the flange flat with a hammer and block, or just buy a new pan.
- RTV on a pan that needs a gasket. Silicone sealant squeezes out, breaks off, and clogs the valve body. Use RTV only where the factory used RTV, never as a substitute for the gasket.
- Old fluid on the sealing surface. The mating surface has to be clean and dry. Any film of ATF and the gasket slips.
- Not retorquing cork. Cork gaskets settle. If you use cork, retorque the bolts after one heat cycle.
How to Do It Right — The 20-Minute Version
- Warm the trans, then let it sit 10 minutes so the fluid is not scalding but flows freely.
- Loosen all pan bolts, then pull the ones on three sides so the pan tilts and drains from one corner into a wide catch pan. Expect 3-6 quarts on a drop.
- Scrape both mating surfaces clean. Brake cleaner and a plastic scraper. No metal gouges.
- Change the filter and its pickup O-ring while you are in there. It costs a few dollars and is the whole point of dropping the pan.
- Set the new gasket dry — no RTV, no grease — unless the gasket instructions say otherwise.
- Snug all bolts by hand, then torque in a criss-cross pattern to the factory spec (typically 8-14 ft-lb; look yours up).
- Fill, run through the gears, recheck level hot, and check for weeps the next morning.
You will need a torque wrench that reads accurately at low values, a fluid pump or funnel for the refill, and the correct ATF. A cheap 1/4-inch inch-pound torque wrench is the single tool that prevents 90 percent of repeat leaks.

Can I just retighten the bolts instead of replacing the gasket?
Sometimes, once, on a fresh leak from a slightly loose pan. Torque the bolts to spec in a criss-cross pattern and watch it. If it still weeps after a heat cycle, the gasket is done or the flange is warped and retightening only makes it worse.
Is a pan gasket leak dangerous to drive with?
A slow weep is not an emergency, but low fluid is what kills transmissions. Check your level weekly and top up. If you are losing more than a few drops a day, fix it before the level drops enough to slip.
Do I need to change the fluid when I do the gasket?
The fluid drains out when you drop the pan, so yes, you refill it either way. Use fresh fluid of the correct spec. Do not pour the old fluid back in.
Cork or reusable gasket — which should I buy?
Reusable steel-core rubber if you can get one for your trans. It does not shrink, does not need retorquing, and survives multiple services. Cork only if that is all that is available, and retorque it after the first drive.
