The 10R80 is the joint Ford-GM 10-speed automatic. Ford calls it the 10R80, GM calls its variant the 10L80/10L90. It sits behind the 5.0 Coyote, the 3.5 EcoBoost, the 6.2 in trucks, and the Mustang GT. It is a strong unit when the fluid is right and the software is current, but it has a short list of repeat failures that send people looking for parts.
Before you order a thing: pull the codes and confirm you actually have an internal failure. A 10R80 that bucks on the 1-2 or shudders at light throttle is very often a torque converter or a software calibration issue, not a worn-out gear set. Many early trucks were fixed with a TCM reflash and a converter, not a teardown. Read our 10R80 shudder TSB writeup and the harsh 1-2 shift fix before you split the case.
What Actually Fails on a 10R80
- Torque converter shudder. The single most common complaint. Lockup clutch chatters at light load, 25-45 mph. Often fixed with the updated converter and fresh Mercon ULV, not a rebuild.
- No.4 and No.5 clutch wear. The high-mileage failure on tuned and towing trucks. Burnt frictions, glazed steels, debris in the pan.
- Valve body bore wear. The aluminum valve body wears at the pressure-control bores. Causes harsh or delayed shifts, codes for solenoid performance.
- Lead frame / internal harness. Connector and solenoid lead-frame faults throw P0700-family and individual solenoid codes.
- Fluid neglect. Mercon ULV is the only correct fluid. Wrong fluid or never-changed fluid is behind a large share of premature failures.
Rebuild Parts Checklist
For a full 10R80 overhaul, here is the realistic shopping list. Buy the master overhaul kit first, then add the hard parts your teardown reveals.
| Part | Why You Need It | Buy Every Time? |
|---|---|---|
| Master overhaul kit | All seals, gaskets, frictions, steels, sealing rings | Yes |
| Friction module / clutch packs | No.4 / No.5 are the usual casualties | Yes |
| Torque converter (updated) | Shudder fix, lockup clutch | Strongly recommended |
| Valve body or bore repair (Sonnax) | Restores line pressure if bores are worn | Inspect first |
| Solenoid / lead-frame assembly | Cures solenoid-performance codes | If codes present |
| Mercon ULV fluid (12+ qt) | The only correct spec, full-fill | Yes |
| Pan + filter | Fresh filter, magnet, clean pan | Yes |

FAQ
Is the 10R80 the same as the GM 10L80?
They share the joint Ford-GM design and most internal architecture, but valve bodies, calibrations, and some hard parts differ. Order parts by the exact unit and vehicle, not just "10-speed."
Do I have to replace the torque converter?
If your symptom is shudder, yes, replace it with the updated converter. If you are already inside for a clutch failure, replacing the converter is cheap insurance against a comeback.
What fluid does a 10R80 take?
Mercon ULV only. It is a very thin, low-viscosity fluid. Do not substitute Mercon LV or V. Wrong fluid causes shudder and shift complaints.
