If you tow more than once a quarter, the factory cooler in your radiator end-tank is not enough. Fluid temperature is the single biggest killer of automatic transmissions. Every 20 degrees Fahrenheit above 200°F roughly cuts ATF life in half. By 260°F you are cooking varnish onto the clutches and frying the friction modifiers. A good auxiliary cooler keeps you under 220°F under load, which is where rebuild kits stop being a yearly expense.
This guide covers the four cooler families we actually trust on heavy-duty trucks: Hayden Rapid-Cool, Derale series 8000/9000, B&M SuperCooler, and the contractor favorite Tru-Cool LPD. We will tell you which one fits which use case, where each one falls down, and how to plumb it without losing factory thermostat control.
Two Cooler Designs — Pick One
Tube-and-Fin (the cheap option)
Round or flat tubes with extruded aluminum fins, soldered into a frame. Cheap to build, easy to mount, OK on light loads. Hayden's lower-tier units and almost everything under $60 falls in this category. Air flow has to be unobstructed for them to work. Cooling capacity drops off a cliff once you stack one behind an A/C condenser.
Stacked-Plate (the right answer for towing)
Flat aluminum plates with internal turbulators, brazed together in a furnace. More surface area, more turbulence, more heat rejection per square inch of frontal area. Costs more, weighs more, but the difference between 230°F and 195°F on a 7% grade is exactly this design. Tru-Cool, Derale 8000/9000 series, and the higher B&M units are all stacked-plate.
Bottom line: if your trailer is over 5,000 lbs or you live where grades hit double digits, do not buy tube-and-fin. Save up another $40 and buy the stacked-plate.

Tru-Cool LPD 47391 — The One We Actually Run
If you have a 3/4-ton or 1-ton truck and you tow for a living, this is the cooler. Long-Plate-Design (LPD) gives you more plate area per inch of width, the internal thermal bypass keeps cold fluid from over-cooling in winter (huge for diesel owners in northern climates), and the build quality is genuinely commercial-grade. We have pulled 7-year-old Tru-Cools off retired tow trucks and put them on the bench — still clean inside, no leaks, fittings still tight.
Downsides: it is heavy, the mounting brackets are not included with every part number, and the AN fittings are an upgrade you should plan for. Skip the rubber hose adapter kit; spend the extra $30 on push-lock or -6AN.
Derale 13950 Series 9000 — Fan-Assisted Cooling
This is the cooler for the guy whose truck sits at idle in traffic, in a parking lot, or at a boat ramp. The integrated 12V fan kicks on when the cooler hits temperature, which solves the biggest weakness of any auxiliary cooler: zero airflow at zero road speed. Pair it with a thermostatic switch (Derale sells one as PN 16729) and it cycles automatically.
Heavier-duty than the B&M, more compact than the Tru-Cool, but the fan adds a wiring step. Budget an extra 30 minutes for the install and run dedicated 14-gauge wire to the battery with an inline fuse.
B&M 70268 SuperCooler — Half-Ton Sweet Spot
The B&M is the upgrade for somebody who tows a 5,000-7,000 lb bumper-pull behind a 1500-series truck or a midsize SUV. Stacked-plate construction, good build quality, sane price point. Not the cooler we would put on a 30-foot fifth-wheel, but for a boat, a small camper, or a utility trailer, it is well-matched to the load.
Mounting hardware is included and the rubber-hose adapter kit is decent enough to use as-is if you do not want to deal with AN fittings.
Hayden 679 — Only If Budget Is Tight
The Hayden 679 is the most-recommended cooler on Amazon because it is the cheapest one that actually works. For a sedan that pulls a single jet ski twice a year, this is fine. For anything heavier or anything routine, buy one of the three above instead. Tube-and-fin design loses 30-40% of its rated capacity when stacked behind an A/C condenser, which is exactly where every aftermarket cooler mounts.
It will not blow up your transmission. It just will not save it either, under real load.
Plumbing It Right — The Mistake Everybody Makes
Here is the install error that ruins more transmissions than it saves: bypassing the factory radiator cooler entirely. Modern transmissions are designed to be warmed up by the engine coolant loop in the radiator end-tank, then cooled down by the auxiliary. Skip the radiator cooler and your fluid never reaches operating temperature in winter, which means moisture never boils out, which means rust on the valve body and varnished clutches by spring.
Correct plumbing order: transmission → factory radiator cooler → auxiliary cooler → back to transmission. The radiator acts as a thermostat. The aux cooler scrubs the heat off the top. Use a thermal bypass valve (Tru-Cool LPD has one built in) and you keep cold fluid out of the loop until it is above 175°F.
- Use 3/8" hose minimum; 1/2" if you have the room
- Replace rubber hose every 5 years — it gets brittle, especially near the headers
- Use spring-clamp constant-tension clamps, not the cheap worm-drive ones
- Keep at least 1" of clearance behind the cooler for fan-pulled airflow
- Mount it ahead of the A/C condenser if you can; behind is OK with stacked-plate, marginal with tube-and-fin
What Temperature Should You See After Install?
Hook up a scan tool or a hard-wired pyrometer and watch the TFT (transmission fluid temperature) PID under load. After install on a properly-spec'd cooler, expect:

If you cannot keep fluid under 230°F towing your usual load with a stacked-plate cooler installed, the problem is somewhere else: dirty fluid, a slipping torque converter clutch, or a partially-clogged factory radiator cooler.

Do I need to remove the factory cooler when I add an aftermarket?
No. Plumb in series, factory cooler first, aux cooler second. Removing the radiator cooler causes winter underheating problems and shortens fluid life.
Stacked-plate vs tube-and-fin — really, does it matter?
Yes. On a load test, a 24,000 BTU stacked-plate will out-cool a 24,000 BTU tube-and-fin by 25-35% in real-world conditions, because the tube-and-fin rating assumes unobstructed frontal airflow that you will never actually have.
Will an electric-fan cooler drain my battery?
The fan only runs when fluid is hot. Wire it through a thermostatic switch (160-180°F closing temp) and it will cycle on for a minute or two at a time, even in stop-and-go. Total draw is 5-7 amps when running.
