Failure mode: Valve body wear (6L90), TCC shudder, pressure control solenoid degradation.
Best for: Buyers who want GM HD reliability with modern 6/8-speed efficiency. 8L90 HD outperforms 6L90.
Tow capacity: rated up to 30,000 lbs.
Common rebuild cost: $5,500-8,500.
Failure mode: Rare on stock service. When it fails, parts are expensive (Aisin-spec).
Best for: Commercial-grade hauling. Heavy-duty Ram chassis used for towing 5th wheel campers and gooseneck trailers above 15,000 lbs.
For maximum tow: Aisin AS69RC. For balance of cost and capacity: Allison 1000 or HD-built 68RFE. Avoid: gas-powered half-tons (4L60E, 6L80) for sustained tow above 6,000 lbs — they were not engineered for it and rebuild costs eat your budget within 100k miles.
