The 4L60E gives you warning signs months before it fails completely. Catching the symptoms early means a $300 solenoid job instead of a $2,500 rebuild. Here are the five symptoms that 90% of 4L60E failures start with.
You put the truck in drive at idle and there is a 1-2 second pause before it moves. Same with reverse. This is sun shell or 3-4 clutch wear — the planetary is no longer holding pressure between shifts. Symptom of internal seal failure or fluid contamination. Fix it now: it gets worse fast.
Engine RPM rises but speed does not. Usually in 2nd or 4th. This is friction-plate wear in the 2-4 band. Once it starts slipping, the friction material is glazing the steels — every mile from this point accelerates the damage.
Feels like driving over rumble strips at 35-45 MPH on flat road. This is TCC (torque converter clutch) friction material breaking down. The friction debris is now contaminating the entire transmission. If you wait, you go from a $400 converter job to a full rebuild. Drop the pan TODAY and look at the magnet — if it has friction material on it, the converter is shedding.
Shifts feel like a bump instead of a smooth transition. Common cause: pressure-control solenoid (EPC) failure or wear. Replace the EPC and the 1-2 / 2-3 shift solenoids and the symptom typically clears in one job.
P0741/P0742 = TCC fault. P0753 = 1-2 solenoid. P1870 = TCC slip. These codes tell you exactly what is wearing. Pull codes BEFORE the transmission gets dragged in for diagnostics — the shop will appreciate it and the diagnostic is faster.
