The 4L80E lives in HD trucks and motor homes — vehicles that ACTUALLY use the transmission. So when it starts failing, the symptoms show up under tow load first. Here are the five symptoms that 90% of 4L80E rebuilds start with.
Truck is fine empty but bangs hard from 1st to 2nd when loaded. This is A or B solenoid pressure control degrading. Both solenoids age at the same rate — replace as a pair.
Cruising at 55-65 MPH with a trailer, you feel rumble strips. This is TCC clutch glazing — the friction material has lost its grip. On a 4L80E in tow service, this is the single biggest cause of rebuild work. If you see it, the converter is shedding material into your transmission. The fix: HD billet converter, NOT another OE reman.
Engine RPM climbs in 4th when you accelerate on the freeway but speed doesn't match. Direct drum cracking is the known 4L80E failure mode — replace with HD upgrade during rebuild or you'll be back in 30k miles.
Most 4L80E rebuilds start with one of these codes. The A and B solenoids set shift schedule — when one sticks, the truck either won't shift past 1st or stays stuck in 3rd. Resistance check first (20-30 ohms), then replace both as a pair.
Drop the pan and check the magnet. Fine friction material = normal. Aluminum or metal chunks = bearing failure or planetary damage. At that point, the transmission is coming out. Sooner is cheaper than later — catching it now saves the converter and pump.
