What it does

Together with the B-solenoid, the A-solenoid sets shift schedule for first, second, third, and overdrive in the 4L80E.

Fitment

1991-2013 GM heavy-duty trucks (Silverado 2500/3500, Sierra HD, Suburban 2500, Express vans, Hummer H1, motor homes).

Common failure symptoms

P0751, stuck in first, no 1-2 shift, harsh 3-4 shift when paired with B-solenoid failure

Electrical specs

Run a resistance check before condemning the solenoid. Bad wiring, corroded harness pins, or a failing PCM driver can cause the same symptoms as a bad solenoid. Eliminate cheap causes first.

Replacement procedure

1. Drop the 4L80E pan (heavier than the 4L60E pan — get a transmission jack)
2. Locate the A-solenoid on the front of the valve body
3. Disconnect harness clip
4. Remove the 10mm bolt and bracket
5. Pull solenoid straight out
6. Lubricate O-ring with fresh ATF
7. Torque to 10 ft-lbs (do not over-tighten — the valve body is aluminum)
8. Replace filter, gasket, refill with Dexron VI

Estimated time: 1 hour for someone who has done this before, 2-3 hours for first-timers. Tools needed: 8mm and 10mm sockets, snap-ring pliers (if removing the valve body), torque wrench, drain pan, fresh ATF.
