The 68RFE in 2007.5-2018 Cummins Rams has known weak points. Every tow truck owner sees one or more of these symptoms before the trans needs work. Here are the five signs your 68RFE is heading for a rebuild — and what to do at each stage.
Pulling a trailer up a grade, RPM rises 200-400 with no speed gain. This is the OE converter clutch glazing. Cummins torque exceeds OE clutch surface area. Solution is billet triple-disc converter — NOT another OE reman.
Bang shifts during tow loads but smooth empty. Solenoid pack wear — internal valves are sticking. Replace as full pack (Sonnax HD, Rostra, or BD), do not try to replace individual solenoids.
CEL with P0868 means line pressure is dropping below threshold. Pressure control solenoid failure or wear in the pump. Diagnose with mechanical pressure gauge before condemning the pump.
Erratic shift points. Late or early shifts. Governor solenoid block degradation. Common at 100k+ miles, especially on tow rigs. Replace governor pressure solenoid first — usually fixes it.
Healthy ATF+4 is bright red. Brown ATF or any burnt smell means the friction material is overheating. By the time it smells, internal damage is already occurring. Drop the pan, inspect, and address before total failure.
