The 6L80 (and its HD sibling 6L90) is in millions of 2006-2017 GM trucks. Most rebuilds start with one of five symptoms. Here is what to watch for and how to catch problems early.
The number one 6L80 complaint. Feels like rumble strips at 40-50 MPH. Fluid flush hides it for 8,000 miles. Real fix is converter replacement plus TCC regulator valve inspection — Sonnax sleeve if the bore is worn.
First gear to second engages with a bang. Pressure control solenoid (EPC) wear. Replace the EPC and verify the 1-2-3-4 shift solenoid is in spec.
If the 6L80 fails to engage reverse OR shifts out of 3rd into neutral, the 3-5 reverse drum has cracked. This is a transmission-out repair. Catch the codes early before total drum failure.
Pump bearing wear. Whine at idle that gets louder with engine RPM. Pump bearing replacement is internal — requires transmission disassembly.
Even moderate tow loads cause line pressure drops. Usually pressure control solenoid + valve body wear combined. Replace EPC and rebuild valve body with Sonnax kit during the same job.
