The 68RFE went into Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 6.7 Cummins starting in the 2007.5 model year. It is a stout transmission for its size, but it is being asked to hold a lot of diesel torque, and the valve body and solenoid pack are what decide how hard and how fast the clutches get applied. When line pressure is soft or inconsistent, the clutches slip, heat builds, and the truck goes into limp mode.
A valve body swap is one of the most effective in-truck repairs on a 68RFE, provided the problem is actually hydraulic and not already burnt clutches.
Symptoms That Point at the Valve Body or Solenoid Pack
- Limp mode (stuck in one gear) with pressure or ratio codes, especially under load or when the fluid is hot.
- P0868 (line pressure low) or pressure switch codes. These often trace to the solenoid pack or the line pressure sensor mounted on it, which is why many people replace the pack first.
- Flare or slip between 2-3 or 4-5 while towing, fine when empty.
- Harsh engagement into drive or reverse or a clunk on downshifts to a stop.
- Converter clutch not locking or cycling on and off on the highway.
Before buying a valve body, check the fluid level with the correct procedure (engine running, at operating temperature), scan for codes, and look at the pan. Heavy friction material on the magnet means the clutches have taken damage, and a valve body alone will not bring them back. The fluid must be ATF+4 or a fluid that meets that spec; see best fluid for the 68RFE.
Fitment: Year Range and Solenoid Pack Match
| Year Range | Notes | Buying Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2007.5-2009 | Early 68RFE, early-style solenoid pack | Buy a body listed for up-to-2009 and confirm check ball count against yours. |
| 2010-2018 | Revised valve body and later solenoid pack with a gray connector on most trucks | The most common reman unit. The solenoid pack connector must match the body calibration. |
| 2019-up | Updated for the 2019 HD redesign | Uses its own valve body. Do not substitute an earlier unit. |
Remanufacturers list both 5-ball and 7-ball versions depending on year and calibration. The check ball count must match your separator plate and case, so count the balls when your old valve body comes off, or match the part number from your old unit. An OEM-number valve body such as 5170877AA covers a wide span but still needs the right solenoid pack for your truck.
Stock Reman vs Performance Valve Body
Stock or Heavy-Duty Remanufactured
Factory calibration, cleaned and tested, with worn parts replaced. The right choice for a stock-power truck that tows within its rating. Heavy-duty reman units add firmer apply for trucks that work hard every day.
Performance Valve Bodies
Units from ATS Diesel and BD Diesel raise line pressure and change the shift and apply timing so the clutches clamp harder and slip less. They make sense when the engine has a tune or added power, or when the truck regularly pulls a heavy fifth wheel or gooseneck. Two things to know before buying one:
- Most are built for a specific solenoid pack connector and year range. ATS lists separate units for early and gray-connector trucks.
- Firmer shifts are part of the deal. If the truck is a daily driver with a family in it, a heavy-duty reman may be the better fit.
Performance valve bodies help the clutches hold, but they do not replace worn clutches or a weak torque converter. On a high-power truck, plan the valve body as part of a full build, see the 68RFE rebuild kit guide.
Install Checklist
- Replace the filter(s) and use new gaskets. Flush the cooler lines if the old fluid was dark or had debris.
- Inspect the solenoid pack and the line pressure sensor. If the pack is original and over 100,000 miles, replace it at the same time.
- Torque the valve body bolts to spec in inch-pounds, see our valve body bolt torque chart.
- Fill with ATF+4 and check the level hot with the engine running.
- Run the quick learn procedure with a capable scan tool. Skipping it is the most common cause of harsh or sloppy shifts after a valve body swap.

2010-2018 Reman Valve Body → Up-to-2009 HD Unit 2019-Up HD Unit Gray Connector Solenoid PackFAQ
Can the 68RFE valve body be replaced with the transmission in the truck?
Yes. Drop the pan, remove the filter and the valve body with the solenoid pack attached. Plan on a half day with the fluid refill and the quick learn.
Do I need to replace the solenoid pack with the valve body?
Not always, but on a high-mileage truck it is cheap insurance. The pack holds the pressure switches and line pressure sensor, and many low-pressure and limp mode complaints trace back to it.
Will a 2010-2018 68RFE valve body fit a 2008 truck?
Not as a straight swap. The early and later units differ in calibration and solenoid pack. Buy a body listed for your year range and match the solenoid pack connector.
Is a performance valve body safe on a stock truck?
It will work, but shifts will be firmer. It makes the most sense with added power or frequent heavy towing.
What fluid does the 68RFE use?
ATF+4 or a fluid that meets the ATF+4 specification. Wrong fluid causes shift quality problems that look like a valve body fault.
