The 6R80 lives in F-150s, Expeditions, Navigators, and Mustang GTs from 2009-2017. The converter is a known weak point past 100,000 miles, especially on tow trucks and tuned vehicles.
Shudder during light throttle cruise (most common 6R80 failure), no lockup at highway speed, P0750 / P0742 codes, friction material in pan, transmission temp climbing under tow.
OE converter uses a single-disc TCC clutch that lacks the surface area for sustained tow duty or tuned-engine torque. After 80,000-120,000 miles in normal use it begins to glaze. Tow trucks see it sooner — 60,000 miles or less.
OE reman: $300-450. HD billet aftermarket (twin-disc, furnace-brazed, billet stator): $550-850. Labor R&R 7-10 hours at shop rate = $630-1,500. Total: $930 to $2,350.
Any F-150 that tows above 6,000 lbs, any tuned vehicle, any lifted truck. The billet upgrade is the difference between 120,000 mile life and 60,000 mile life on a tow rig.
Front pump bushing has to be inspected — common 6R80 wear point. Input shaft splines should be checked for wear. Mercon LV ONLY on refill — using Mercon V or Dexron will destroy the new converter inside 5,000 miles.
