5 Warning Signs Your Ford 6R80 is Failing

The 6R80 in 2009-2017 Ford F-150s and Expeditions is generally a reliable transmission, but it has predictable failure points. Five symptoms cover 90% of rebuild work.

1. TCC shudder under light throttle cruise

The most common 6R80 complaint past 100,000 miles. OE TCC clutch is a single disc and lacks the surface area for sustained tow duty. Once it shudders, the converter is shedding into the trans.

2. No converter lockup at highway speed

TCC solenoid failure or PWM TCC failure. Diagnose with scan tool — should see PWM duty cycle commanded at cruise. If commanded but not engaging, the solenoid or converter is the issue.

3. Harsh 3-4 or 5-6 shift

Solenoid body wear. The 6R80 uses an integrated solenoid pack — when one element wears, the whole pack typically needs replacement. Plan for $400-600 in parts.
