Aisin TF-80SC
Problems & Repair Cost

The 6-speed Aisin transaxle (AF40-6) shared across Volvo, Ford, GM, Mini, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Peugeot. Here is what breaks, how to catch it, and what the repair runs in 2026.

The Aisin TF-80SC is one of the most widely fitted 6-speed automatic transaxles ever built, and almost nobody knows it by name because every automaker rebadged it. Volvo calls it the TF-80SC. GM calls it the AF40-6. Ford, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Citroen, Mini, Mazda, and Saab all used versions of the same box. If you have a transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive car from roughly 2005 to 2015 with a 6-speed automatic and it was not a CVT or a dual-clutch, there is a good chance an Aisin TF-80SC is bolted to it.

It is fundamentally a strong, well-regarded unit. The failures that do show up are predictable, mostly maintenance-driven, and cluster in three places: the torque converter lock-up clutch, the valve body and its solenoids, and the internal wear that comes from running the factory "lifetime" fluid to 150,000 miles.

The Three Main Failure Areas

Torque Converter Lock-Up Shudder

The most common complaint. At light throttle around 30 to 45 mph, as the converter clutch tries to lock, you feel a shudder or vibration like driving over rumble strips. It comes from the lock-up clutch friction material breaking down and contaminating the fluid, which then makes every other clutch pack wear faster. Caught early, a fluid flush and sometimes a friction-modifier additive can quiet it. Left alone, the debris circulates and the shudder becomes a full converter failure.

Valve Body and Solenoid Wear

The TF-80SC valve body bores wear, and the linear solenoids that control shift pressure drift out of spec. Symptoms: harsh or delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse, flaring between gears (revs climb during a shift), and occasional hard 2-3 or 3-4 shifts. Fault codes often point at specific shift solenoids or pressure control. Many of these cars go to a shop for a "new transmission" when a valve body rebuild and solenoid replacement fixes it for a fraction of the cost.

Fluid Neglect Damage

Volvo and others originally marketed this as a fill-for-life box. It is not. The fluid shears down and darkens, the additive package depletes, and heat does the rest. A TF-80SC that has never had a fluid service by 120,000 miles is the classic case that shows up shuddering and shifting hard. The single biggest thing an owner can do to protect this transmission is a proper drain-and-fill every 60,000 miles with the correct Aisin-spec fluid.

2026 Repair Cost Ranges

Because so many brands share this box, pricing varies with badge and labor rates. The ranges below are typical independent-specialist figures including parts and labor.

RepairWhat It CoversTypical Cost (Parts + Labor)
Fluid drain & fillCorrect Aisin-spec ATF, gasket, filter if accessible$180 – $350
Solenoid replacementOne or more shift/pressure solenoids$350 – $800
Valve body rebuild/replaceReman valve body plus fluid and labor$700 – $1,600
Torque converter replacementNew/reman converter, flush, labor$1,000 – $1,900
Full rebuildClutches, seals, converter, valve body$2,600 – $4,200
Reman/replacement unitComplete reman transaxle installed$3,500 – $5,500

The lesson in that table is the gap between the top and bottom rows. A shudder caught at the fluid-service stage is a few hundred dollars. The same shudder ignored for two years becomes a converter and clutch-pack contamination problem measured in thousands.

Symptoms and What They Usually Mean

None of these are automatically a rebuild. The TF-80SC responds well to targeted repair when the fluid has not been destroyed yet, which is exactly why an early diagnosis pays for itself.

Parts and Tools to Diagnose and Maintain It

The Right Aisin-Spec Fluid

This box is fussy about fluid. Using the correct Aisin/JWS-spec ATF (the exact call-out depends on your make and year) is what keeps the lock-up clutch and solenoids happy. A cheap universal ATF is a common cause of shudder that will not go away. Match the spec in your service manual before you buy.

A Scan Tool That Reads Transmission Data

To tell a solenoid fault from a converter fault you need live transmission data and stored codes, not just a check-engine light. A capable OBD2 tool that reads transmission modules turns guesswork into a specific diagnosis you can take to a shop.

Aisin-Spec Filter and Gasket Kit

If you do the drain-and-fill yourself, a service kit with the correct pan gasket and filter for the TF-80SC/AF40 saves a second trip. Confirm the kit lists your exact transmission code.

How to Make a TF-80SC Last

The owners who get 250,000 miles out of this box do three things. They service the fluid every 60,000 miles with the correct spec, no exceptions. They treat any highway shudder as a call to action rather than a quirk to ignore. And they add a transmission cooler if the car tows, carries loads, or lives in a hot climate, because heat is what shortens every clutch and solenoid in the unit. Do those three and the TF-80SC earns back the good reputation it usually deserves.

FAQ

Which cars use the Aisin TF-80SC?

Many transverse 6-speed automatics from Volvo, Ford, GM (as AF40-6), Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Citroen, Mini, Mazda, and Saab, roughly 2005 to 2015. Check your transmission code before ordering parts, as fitments vary by engine and year.

Is the shudder always a torque converter?

Not always, but lock-up clutch shudder is the most common cause of a light-throttle highway vibration on this box. A fluid analysis and scan will confirm before you spend on a converter.

Can I really run it to a lifetime fill?

You can, and it is the fastest way to a shudder-and-hard-shift repair. Treat 60,000 miles as the real fluid interval.

Is a valve body rebuild cheaper than a whole transmission?

Usually far cheaper, if the clutches and converter are still clean. That is why an early diagnosis matters so much on the TF-80SC.
