Best Transmission Fluid
for a Nissan CVT

NS-3 vs NS-2, why "universal" CVT fluid is the fastest way to kill a Nissan Jatco box, and how often you really need to change it. Altima, Rogue, Sentra, Murano, Pathfinder, Maxima.

Fluid recommendations are based on Nissan's own spec and what actually holds up in these transmissions, not what is cheapest on the shelf.

Nissan CVTs are unforgiving about fluid. These are Jatco continuously variable transmissions that run a steel belt or chain squeezed between two variable pulleys, and the fluid is not just lubrication, it is the friction medium that lets the belt grip without slipping. Put the wrong fluid in and the belt slips, glazes the pulleys, overheats, and you are looking at a replacement long before the vehicle should need one. This is why fluid choice matters more on a Nissan CVT than on almost any conventional automatic.

Here is the direct answer: use genuine Nissan CVT Fluid NS-3 for 2013-and-newer models, and NS-2 for roughly 2007-2012 models. If you want an aftermarket option, it must be explicitly formulated and labeled for Nissan NS-3 (or NS-2), from a name-brand maker. Do not use a bottle that says "works in all CVTs." That is the mistake that ends these transmissions.

Which Fluid for Which Model

Model / EraRequired FluidApprox. Capacity (drain & fill)
Altima, Rogue, Sentra, Versa (2013+)Nissan NS-3~4.5-5 qt
Murano, Maxima, Pathfinder (2013+)Nissan NS-3~5-6 qt
Altima, Maxima, Rogue (2007-2012)Nissan NS-2~4.5-5 qt
Murano, Versa (2007-2012)Nissan NS-2~5-6 qt

Always confirm against the underhood label or owner's manual for your exact VIN and year. Some transition-year models can go either way, and a few Jatco variants use different specs. When in doubt, match the label on the transmission, not a forum post.

Why "Universal" CVT Fluid Kills These Transmissions

The single most common reason a healthy Nissan CVT gets junked early is a fluid change done with the wrong fluid. A quick-lube shop drops in a jug labeled "full synthetic multi-vehicle CVT fluid, replaces NS-2/NS-3 and eight others." It goes in fine. Then a few thousand miles later the customer notices judder at low speed, or a shudder pulling away from a stop, or a whine that rises with speed. That is the belt slipping on the pulleys because the friction characteristics of the universal fluid are wrong for this design.

CVT belt-to-pulley traction depends on a very specific fluid friction profile. Nissan formulates NS-2 and NS-3 to hit that number. A one-size-fits-all fluid is a compromise blend trying to be acceptable in a dozen CVTs, and "acceptable" in a Nissan Jatco often means gradual pulley glazing. By the time the symptoms show up, the damage is done and no fluid change reverses it.

The rule is simple: use the exact spec, or use a reputable aftermarket fluid that specifically states full compatibility with Nissan NS-3 (or NS-2) by name. Nothing else.

How Often to Change It (Ignore "Lifetime")

Nissan calls the fluid lifetime-fill under normal conditions on many of these, and that is optimistic. CVT fluid shears down and loses its friction properties with heat and miles. The single biggest thing you can do to make a Nissan CVT last is change the fluid on a real interval and keep it cool.

Do a drain-and-fill, not a high-pressure flush machine, on a high-mileage CVT that has never been serviced. A flush can dislodge debris and push it into the valve body. Several drain-and-fills spaced a few hundred miles apart safely refresh most of the fluid without that risk.

Keep the Fluid Cool

Heat is what wears CVT fluid out and cooks the belt. If you tow, live where it is hot, or your Nissan CVT already runs warm, an auxiliary CVT cooler is one of the best insurance policies you can add. Nissan CVT temperatures climbing past the mid-200s Fahrenheit is where fluid life falls off a cliff. Keep it in the low 200s and the fluid, and the transmission, last far longer.

FAQ

Can I use NS-3 in a car that called for NS-2?

Not by default. NS-2 and NS-3 are different formulations for different Jatco generations. Some sources treat NS-3 as backward-compatible, but do not assume it. Match what the underhood label and manual specify for your exact year and VIN.

Is aftermarket CVT fluid ever okay?

Yes, if it is from a reputable maker and explicitly states it meets Nissan NS-3 (or NS-2) by name, not a vague "universal CVT" claim. The word to look for is the actual Nissan spec on the label.

My Nissan CVT already shudders. Will fresh fluid fix it?

Sometimes a proper fluid change quiets an early judder if the belt and pulleys are not yet damaged. If the shudder returns quickly or a whine is present, the belt or pulleys are likely worn and fluid alone will not save it. Change the fluid, but set your expectations.
