The Chevy Traverse is a heavy three-row crossover asking a transverse (sideways-mounted) automatic to move a lot of weight, and that is exactly why its transmission is a common failure point. Which transmission you have depends on the year, and it changes both the cost and the smart repair path.
- 2009-2017 (first gen): GM 6T70 / 6T75 six-speed. Known for wave-plate failure and the "shudder into 3rd" that precedes it.
- 2018-2023 (second gen): GM 9T65 nine-speed. Newer, fewer catastrophic failures, but valve body and torque converter shudder complaints are real.
- 2024+ : continued 9-speed with software revisions.
Get the transmission identified before you price anything. A rebuild quote for a 6T70 and a 9T65 are not interchangeable numbers.
2026 Cost by Repair Path
Installed, parts-plus-labor, at a typical independent transmission shop. Dealers run higher.
| Repair Path | 6T70 / 6T75 (2009-2017) | 9T65 (2018+) |
|---|---|---|
| Full rebuild (installed) | $2,600 - $3,800 | $3,400 - $4,800 |
| Reman unit (installed) | $3,500 - $4,800 | $4,500 - $6,200 |
| Used / salvage (installed) | $1,900 - $3,000 | $2,800 - $4,200 |
| Valve body / solenoid only | $700 - $1,400 | $900 - $1,800 |
A dealer will quote a factory reman on a first-gen Traverse around $5,000 - $6,500 out the door. That is often more than the vehicle is worth, which is why the rebuild-vs-replace math below matters so much on this SUV specifically.
What Actually Fails
6T70 / 6T75 (first gen)
- 3-5-R wave plate cracks. The signature 6T70 failure. You lose 3rd, 5th, and reverse, often all at once. This is a hard-parts failure that demands a rebuild — a fluid change will not save it.
- Torque converter shudder. Judder around 40-50 mph under light throttle. Sometimes fixable with a fluid exchange and a converter clutch reflash if caught early.
- Pump / pressure loss. Slipping that gets worse as the trans warms up.
9T65 (second gen)
- Harsh or delayed shifts traced to valve body wear and software.
- Converter shudder similar to the six-speed, often cured with the correct fluid and a TCM update before it becomes mechanical.
The lesson: a first-gen Traverse that lost reverse needs a rebuild. A second-gen Traverse that shudders needs a fluid service and a scan before anyone touches the case.
Rebuild vs Replace on This SUV
The Traverse is one of the clearer rebuild-vs-replace decisions out there, because the vehicle depreciates fast and the transmission repair is expensive relative to resale value.
- Rebuild if the body and engine are solid, you plan to keep it 3+ more years, and the quote is under half the vehicle's value. A quality rebuild with updated wave plates outlasts the original.
- Reman if you want a warranty you can carry across shops and the price gap over a rebuild is small.
- Used unit if the vehicle is high-mileage and you just need it to run — but buy from a yard that guarantees mileage and get the shudder-prone converter addressed.
- Walk away if the repair exceeds 60% of the vehicle's value and it has other looming issues. On an old Traverse that is a real possibility.

FAQ
Why is my Traverse losing reverse and 3rd gear together?
That is the classic 6T70 3-5-R wave plate cracking. It is a mechanical failure that requires the transmission to come apart. Do not let anyone sell you a fluid flush as the fix.
Is a rebuild cheaper than a reman on a Traverse?
Usually, yes — a rebuild runs a few hundred to a thousand less than a reman. The tradeoff is that a reman comes with a nationwide warranty, while a rebuild warranty is tied to the shop that did it.
Can regular fluid changes prevent the wave plate failure?
Fresh fluid helps overall longevity and can stave off converter shudder, but the wave plate is a design weakness — clean fluid slows it, it does not eliminate it. Rebuilders install updated wave plates to fix the root cause.
