A transmission rebuild means the unit comes out, gets torn down to the case, worn parts get replaced, and it goes back together to spec. The bill is the sum of three things: parts, labor to remove and reinstall, and labor to actually rebuild. The single biggest swing between a cheap rebuild and an expensive one is the transmission itself — a 4L60E is a known, simple, parts-everywhere unit. A 10-speed 10R80 or a CVT is not.
Below are honest 2026 ranges. The low end is a competent independent shop or a careful DIY with quality parts. The high end is a dealer, a heavy-duty diesel unit, or a job that turned up a cracked case or a damaged converter.
2026 Rebuild Cost Ranges by Transmission
| Transmission | Common Vehicles | Rebuild Cost (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 4L60E / 4L65E | Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Camaro | $1,800 - $2,800 |
| 4L80E | HD Silverado, Suburban, vans | $2,200 - $3,400 |
| 6L80 / 6L90 | Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe (2007+) | $2,500 - $4,000 |
| 6R80 | F-150, Expedition, Mustang | $2,500 - $4,000 |
| 10R80 (10-speed) | F-150, Bronco (2017+) | $3,500 - $5,500 |
| 68RFE | Ram 2500/3500 Cummins | $3,000 - $5,500 |
| Allison 1000 | Silverado/Sierra HD Duramax | $3,500 - $6,000 |
| Honda 5/6-speed automatic | Accord, Odyssey, Pilot | $2,200 - $3,800 |
| ZF 8HP | Ram 1500, BMW, Jeep, Dodge | $3,000 - $5,500 |
| CVT (rebuild/replace) | Nissan, Subaru, many imports | $3,000 - $5,000 |
Most shops price a rebuild as parts plus a flat labor figure, often quoting a range until they open the unit. The reason for the range is real: a transmission that slipped for months grinds metal into everything and pushes you toward the high end.
What Actually Drives the Price
1. Removal and Reinstall Labor
An RWD truck trans drops out the bottom in a few hours. A transverse FWD unit in a tight engine bay, or a 4WD with a transfer case and skid plates, takes far longer. This R&R labor alone can be 6-12 hours.
2. How Bad the Damage Is
Caught early, you replace clutches, seals, and a few hard parts. Run it to failure and you can need a pump, drums, a valve body, and sometimes the converter and case — doubling the parts bill.
3. Torque Converter
Most quality rebuilds include a new or reman converter. A slipping or contaminated converter that gets reused just sends debris back into your fresh rebuild. Budget $150-400 for the converter as part of the job.
4. Parts Source
This is where a DIYer saves the most. A master rebuild kit with quality frictions, steels, seals, and a filter for a common unit runs a few hundred dollars. Dealer parts cost multiples of that. See our full rebuild cost breakdown.
Rebuild vs Replace vs Reman
Three paths, three price points:
- Rebuild your unit: usually the cheapest if the case and hard parts are good. You keep your original housing.
- Reman unit (drop-in): a remanufactured trans built to spec on a bench, often with a national warranty. Costs more than a rebuild but faster turnaround and warranty coverage.
- Used / junkyard unit: cheapest upfront, biggest gamble. You inherit someone else's wear with no idea of history.
We break the math down in rebuilt vs remanufactured vs used and rebuild vs replace cost comparison.
How to Cut the Cost
- Catch it early. A burnt smell or mild slip caught before clutch failure can sometimes be a fluid service, not a rebuild.
- Supply your own quality parts. A good master kit and a quality converter from a parts-direct source cut the biggest line item. Shop kits at Gearbox Insider below.
- DIY the R&R if you can. Removing and reinstalling the unit yourself eliminates the largest labor charge. A proper transmission jack makes this safe.
- Get the rebuild done by an independent transmission specialist, not a general shop and not the dealer. Specialists rebuild these all day and price accordingly.
- Add a cooler at the same time if you tow. A few hundred miles of overheating is what killed the last one. See our cooler guide.

Why is my dealer quote so much higher than these ranges?
Dealers charge dealer labor rates and usually install a new or factory-reman unit rather than rebuilding yours. An independent transmission specialist with quality parts is typically far cheaper for the same outcome.
Is it worth rebuilding a high-mileage vehicle?
If the body and engine are sound, a rebuild is almost always cheaper than buying another vehicle and inheriting its unknowns. Compare the rebuild cost to your vehicle's value and remaining life.
How long does a rebuilt transmission last?
A quality rebuild with good parts and proper fluid maintenance can match or exceed original life — well over 100,000 miles — especially with a cooler added if you tow.
Can I rebuild it myself?
A 4L60E or TH350 is a realistic DIY for a patient mechanic with the right tools and a rebuild manual. A 10-speed or CVT is best left to a specialist.
