Three options when your transmission fails: rebuild the existing unit, drop in a remanufactured replacement, or install a brand-new dealer transmission. Each has different cost and warranty trade-offs.
Shop tears down your current transmission, replaces all clutches, frictions, seals, gaskets, and worn hard parts. Lowest cost option. Takes 3-5 business days. Quality depends entirely on the rebuilder — get a referral, do not chase the cheapest quote.
Pre-built transmission ships from a remanufacturer (Jasper, BlueDot, Certified Transmission). Shop bolts it in, fills it, returns the old unit as a core. Faster install (1-2 days). Longer warranty (typically 3 years / 100k miles vs 1 year on a rebuild). Best for: shops that want quick turn, customers that want the longest warranty.
Brand-new transmission from the OEM. Highest cost. Best warranty (typically 3 years / 36k or whatever the new-car warranty was). Only worth it on a near-new vehicle or a luxury vehicle where the customer wants OEM exact-spec.
Vehicle under $8,000 value: rebuild. New / reman cost more than the truck is worth.
Vehicle $8,000-25,000 value: rebuild OR reman depending on warranty preference. Reman makes sense if customer plans to keep the vehicle 5+ years.
Vehicle over $25,000 value, late model: reman or new. The rebuild cost differential is worth the longer warranty on a vehicle the customer wants to keep.
On rebuilds, source parts from a direct-shop wholesaler (like gearboxinsider.com) instead of running to the local parts store. You save 30-50% on margin and the customer sees the savings on the final invoice.
