"My transmission is slipping" is the most common complaint that gets a transmission unnecessarily rebuilt. About one in three of those slip complaints turns out to be something that costs under $200 to fix: a solenoid, a sensor, a wiring issue, or fluid that's two quarts low and burnt. The other two are real internal problems — clutches, bands, sealing rings — but you will not know which is which until you work through the diagnostic in order.
Spend an hour on the eight steps below before you commit to a rebuild or a swap. If the unit is genuinely toasted, you will know inside of 60 minutes and you can plan the job. If it is something else, you might be able to fix it in your driveway for the cost of a coffee.
Step 1Read the Codes
Every diagnostic starts here. Even if the check engine light is off, scan for pending codes and history codes. Modern PCMs log transmission events that never trigger the lamp.
Codes that point at a slip but are NOT a slip:
- P0717 — input speed sensor (PCM thinks it sees slip because sensor is reading erratically)
- P0720 — output speed sensor (same logic)
- P0741 / P0742 — torque converter clutch (TCC slip; not internal clutch slip)
- P0753 / P0758 / P0763 — shift solenoid electrical (PCM cannot command a clean shift)
- P0894 — transmission component slipping (this one IS internal, usually)
A $30 scanner reads generic codes. To get manufacturer-specific codes and live transmission data (which is what you actually need on the next step), get a bi-directional scan tool that reads transmission PIDs.

Generic readers won't show TFT, gear commanded, or solenoid duty cycle. For real transmission diagnostics, get a tool that does:

Step 2Check the Fluid (Level, Color, Smell)
The single most-skipped diagnostic step. Park on level ground. Engine warm, running, in Park or Neutral per the manufacturer (read the dipstick — different brands spec different conditions).
- Level low: low pressure = clutch slip. Top up to spec and re-evaluate. If it was 2+ quarts low, where did the fluid go? Leak hunt before anything else.
- Level high: overfill aerates the fluid, causes foam, causes pressure inconsistency, causes intermittent slip.
- Color brown/black: oxidized fluid, almost certainly worn clutches contributing material to the fluid. Internal damage likely already in progress.
- Smells burnt: heat damage to friction surfaces. Internal slip already happening.
- Milky / pink: coolant intrusion (cracked transmission cooler in radiator). Stop driving immediately.
On a sealed-for-life transmission with no dipstick (most 6L80, 6R80, 8HP, modern Toyotas), pull the fill plug at operating temperature and check for the fluid weeping line. Procedure varies by trans; do not skip it.
Step 3Watch Live Data — The Real Test
Connect the scan tool. Datalog while driving with a passenger watching the screen (or hook to a laptop). The PIDs that matter:

If commanded gear and actual gear match but engine RPM flares during shifts, that is clutch slip during the shift event. If commanded gear is 3rd but actual gear stays in 2nd, that is a failed shift — usually solenoid or valve body. If TCC duty cycle is 100% but slip RPM is more than 50, that is TCC clutch wear (often P0741).
Step 4Stall Test (For Torque Converter Slip)
Disclaimer: this is hard on the transmission. Do it once if you suspect converter or front-end clutch failure, then stop.
Foot hard on the brake, shift into Drive, floor the throttle for 3-5 seconds, watch the tach. Compare to factory spec for the engine/trans combo. Most stall RPM specs land between 1,800 and 2,400 RPM at WOT.
- RPM way above spec (3,000+): converter slipping, or forward / direct clutch slipping internally
- RPM well below spec: engine making low torque (not a trans problem)
- RPM matches spec: torque converter and forward clutches OK
Step 5Line Pressure Test
If the transmission has a pressure tap (most older units do; some modern units do not), thread in a transmission pressure gauge and read line pressure in each gear at idle and at 1,500 RPM. Compare to the factory pressure spec for that trans — out-of-spec low line pressure means a failing pump, leaky pressure regulator, or worn-out clutch seal that is bleeding pressure.
Low line pressure across the board points at pump. Low pressure in one specific gear points at a clutch circuit in that gear. This single test will save you a lot of guessing.
Step 6Wiring & Connector Inspection
The 12-pin pass-through connector on the trans case is the source of more intermittent shift problems than the parts inside. Pull the connector, inspect for green corrosion, oil weeping in from the inside (failed grommet), or pushed-out terminals. Re-pin or replace the connector pigtail if any terminal is loose.
On a 4L60E / 4L80E specifically, the case connector seal fails routinely and fluid wicks into the harness, corroding terminals from the inside out. The transmission "slips" because the solenoid signals are degraded, not because anything inside is worn.
Step 7Drop the Pan — Read the Magnet
If steps 1-6 have not produced an answer, drop the pan. What's on the magnet tells you what is wearing inside:
- Fine gray paste (normal): normal wear, no specific problem
- Coarse silver chunks: hard part failure — pump, planet, sprag, splines
- Black friction material (lots of it): clutch packs are coming apart
- Brass chunks: thrust washer or bushing failure
- Steel curls: something is being machined inside that should not be. Stop. The unit is junk.
Cut the filter open and inspect the media for the same debris pattern. Photograph everything you find before you reassemble — you will want it if the rebuilder asks.
Step 8Decide: Repair, Rebuild, or Replace
By now you know what is wrong. Match the symptom to the path:

Should I add a stop-slip additive?
No. Friction modifier swelling agents (the "stops slip" miracle bottles) work for a few thousand miles by swelling the clutch friction material, then accelerate wear on the surrounding components. If a transmission is slipping, fix the cause.
Can I diagnose this without a scan tool?
Partially. Fluid check, pan drop, and stall test are all done with hand tools. But without live data, you are guessing at sensor and solenoid issues — and those are the cheapest fixes when you find them. The investment in a $150 scan tool pays for itself the first time it saves you from an unnecessary rebuild.
What does P0894 mean exactly?
"Transmission component slipping." The PCM has detected that input and output shaft speeds do not match what the commanded gear should produce. Almost always real internal slip — clutch pack, band, sprag, or low line pressure. Time to drop the pan and read the magnet.
