How to Tell If Your Transmission is Going Bad

Most transmission failures show warning signs 1-6 months before total failure. Catching them early means a $300 solenoid job instead of a $2,500 rebuild. Here are 10 early warning signs and what each one usually indicates.

1. Delayed engagement when shifting into drive or reverse

You shift into D or R at idle, and there is a 1-2 second pause before the vehicle moves. Usually internal seal wear or fluid pressure issue. URGENCY: medium. Fix early before it becomes a rebuild.

2. Hard or harsh shifts

Shifts feel like a bump or clunk instead of smooth. Usually pressure control solenoid (EPC) wear or shift solenoid issue. URGENCY: medium. $300-500 fix typically resolves.

3. Slipping in any gear

Engine RPM rises but speed does not match. Internal clutch glazing or fluid pressure loss. URGENCY: high. Slipping causes friction-material contamination that damages everything else.

4. Burning smell from under the hood

Burnt ATF smell. Means transmission is overheating internally. URGENCY: stop driving until inspected. Could be low fluid, blocked cooler, or internal failure.
