The 10R80 is the ten-speed automatic behind the 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L Coyote, and 3.0L Power Stroke in 2017-and-up F-150s (and it is the same core unit as the GM 10L80). It is a stout transmission, but the single most common driveability complaint against it is a low-speed torque converter shudder that feels like driving over rumble strips at 25-45 mph under light throttle. On most trucks that shudder traces back to the converter clutch and the fluid, not a mechanically dead transmission.
That distinction is the whole ballgame for cost. A converter that is only shuddering can often be fixed with a fluid service and, in early cases, has been addressed under Ford's TSBs. A converter that has actually failed — locked up, ballooned, or shedding clutch material into the pan — means pulling the transmission, and if that debris has already circulated, you may be looking at a rebuild rather than a converter swap.
2026 Cost Ranges — F-150 10R80 Converter
The converter itself is buried behind the transmission. There is no way to replace it without unbolting the trans from the engine, so labor dominates the bill. On a 4x4 SuperCrew, dropping the transmission is a 6-9 hour job.
| Repair Path | Parts | Total Installed (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid service for early shudder | $60-$140 (Mercon ULV) | $180-$400 |
| Converter replacement (independent) | $300-$600 | $1,300-$2,400 |
| Converter replacement (Ford dealer) | $450-$750 | $1,900-$3,200 |
| Converter + valve body / solenoids | $700-$1,200 | $2,400-$3,800 |
| Full rebuild (debris already circulated) | — | $4,500-$7,000 |
The reason to catch this early is the bottom two rows. Once a shuddering converter clutch has been throwing friction material into the fluid for thousands of miles, that grit scores the valve body bores and coats the solenoids. At that point a converter alone will not fix it, and the quote jumps.
Shudder or Dead Converter? Tell Them Apart Before You Pay
Spend ten minutes diagnosing before you approve any converter quote.
Signs it is still just a shudder (cheaper to fix)
- Vibration only in a narrow speed band (25-45 mph), light throttle, when the converter is trying to lock.
- Goes away if you tap the throttle or the trans downshifts out of lockup.
- No stored transmission codes, no limp mode.
- Fluid on the dipstick or extractor is dark but not full of glitter.
Signs the converter is failing (expensive)
- Shudder is constant across speeds, or a hard vibration at a dead stop in gear.
- Stall or stumble when coming to a stop, engine wanting to die in Drive.
- P0741 (TCC stuck off) or slipping RPM flare that will not clear with fluid.
- Metallic glitter or a burnt smell in the pan fluid.
An OBD2 scan tool that reads live transmission data lets you watch TCC slip in real time and confirm whether the clutch is holding.

Fluid Is Not Optional On This Transmission
The 10R80 is factory-filled with Motorcraft Mercon ULV (ultra-low viscosity). The wrong fluid is a direct cause of shudder complaints. If a shop or a previous owner topped it with plain Mercon LV or a generic multi-vehicle ATF, the converter clutch will chatter. Ford's own service fix for early shudder cases was a fluid exchange with fresh ULV. Do not let anyone put anything but ULV in this unit.
If you are DIY-servicing to chase an early shudder, a full drain-and-fill (this trans holds roughly 12.5-13 quarts total, and a pan drop only gets about half) with genuine ULV is the cheapest thing you can try.

- Fix it while it is only a shudder. The single biggest cost driver is waiting until debris circulates. A $300 fluid service now beats a $5,000 rebuild later.
- Use an independent transmission specialist over the dealer for the same converter part — labor rates are usually $30-$60/hour lower and the job is 6-9 hours.
- Insist on a new OE-quality converter, not a low-end reman, and ask that they drop the pan to check for debris before quoting.
- Add a transmission cooler if you tow. Heat is what cooks the ULV and accelerates converter clutch wear.
FAQ
Is the 10R80 shudder covered under warranty?
If your truck is still inside the powertrain warranty (5 years / 60,000 miles on most F-150s), the shudder should be a warranty claim — take it to the dealer before you pay a dime. Ford issued technical service bulletins for the early shudder complaint.
Can I replace just the torque converter without a rebuild?
Yes, if the transmission is otherwise healthy and the pan fluid is clean. The trans has to come out either way, so the labor is the same whether you swap the converter or rebuild.
How long does a 10R80 torque converter last?
A healthy one lasts the life of the truck. The failures are almost always heat-and-fluid driven: towing hard, never servicing, or the wrong ATF. Service the fluid on schedule with ULV and it holds up.
