Which transmission is in your Acadia decides almost everything about the bill. First-generation models (2007-2016) and the 2017-up second generation with the 3.6L V6 run the GM 6T70/6T75 six-speed. The four-cylinder 2.5L second-gen cars use the 9T50/9T65 nine-speed. Different failures, different part costs, different labor.
The failure that lands most Acadias on a lift is the 6T70 1-2-3-4 / 3-5-reverse wave plate. When it cracks, you lose reverse and 3rd/5th, often with a P0894 (transmission component slipping) code. It is a known weak point, and it is why "my Acadia won't back up" is such a common complaint.

The 9T65 costs more because it is newer, parts are pricier, and fewer independent shops have the tooling and TCM relearn experience for it. If your Acadia has the nine-speed, get a shop that has done them before.

Rebuild the original unit
- Best when the case is good and you have a shop that knows the 6T70. A quality rebuild with an updated wave plate and a good friction/steel kit will outlast the factory unit.
- Insist the rebuild includes the upgraded wave plate, new solenoids, and a fresh torque converter — not a "reseal and clutch" shortcut.
Drop in a reman transmission
- Best when you need the car back fast or the local shops are not 6T70 specialists. You are buying a warranty and known turnaround.
- Ask whether the reman is a quality remanufacturer's unit with the wave-plate update, or a bargain reman that will fail the same way.
For a high-mileage Acadia, weigh the total against the truck's value — a $5,000 rebuild on a car worth $6,000 is a hard call.
What Drives The Quote Up Or Down
- Reverse already gone, driven anyway. Running a cracked wave plate spreads debris through the valve body and solenoids, turning a repair into a full rebuild.
- AWD vs FWD. The transfer unit and extra driveline add labor on AWD Acadias.
- Torque converter. A good rebuild replaces it. A cheap quote reuses it and you risk re-contaminating the fresh build.
- TCM relearn. After the job the shop must run the shift adaptives relearn or it will shift harshly — make sure it is included.

Is the GMC Acadia transmission reliable?

Can I just fix reverse without a full rebuild?
